real-life military drones are flown by regular pilots unless they're some hand-launched diddly thing. In which case, in the British Army at least, I think they're flown by communications or computer specialists...

looking at the blueprints, it seems more like a missile than a UAV. Okay it seems to lack a warhead, but the blueprints refer to 'fire control radar' and a 'missile rack'. That hardly seems like stuff you'd have on a vehicle supporting a recon drone.

The blueprints are confusing. Words like "remote piloted vehicle" and "drone" suggest that's it's a UAV but the prints and instructions refer to it as a "missile" on a "missile rack" and the seat is a "fire control" station. So which is it? A drone or a missile? Either way you're looking at operators from the aviation branch or air defense artillery branch.

The bottom of the drone looks like it has a smaller orange missile attached. Maybe that's what gets launched by the fire control when a target is spotted while in flight?

The blueprints do say that the drone is propelled by a "turbofan." So, that wouldn't burn the driver, would it (just blow him away)?

Most jet engines are turbofans. It just means that most of the air bypasses the turbine for propulsion. Remember, it takes a lot of force to propel a heavy object so imagine the pounds of thrust needed to move an object the size of the RPV. Maybe if it were a tiny turbine-powered model, you wouldn't need to worry, but anyone standing behind that thing on launch would feel a mighty blast. There would be heat as well, but the blast would probably do more damage.

I do remember Max Brooks upgrading Blowtorch to firing all incendiary weapons and bombs (in "Hearts & Minds"), which makes more sense for the use of the 4 "Flamethrower" troopers on the JOE team (since the Geneva Convention prohibits burning enemy troops alive). And who needs 4 guys to act as breachers all the time, especially when that's the slowest form of entry into an enclosed space. So if the "drone" is an incendiary missile of some kind, maybe Blowtorch, Charbroil, Ice Cream Soldier and Blast-Off are all qualified (and protected) to operate the RPV (even though they aren't pilots), because it is basically just a huge missile full of fire? (I'm reaching, I know.) |

I was always at a loss as to where to place Fast Draw so he could definitely fill that role. I wouldn't want to pull Ace out of the skystriker.
