Someone said something the other day that had me thinking: shotguns are pretty useless in the military, they said, except for breaching. Does that mean that Flint and Falcon mostly use their weapons for this; or are there other purposes for a shotgun in the field (based on their file-cards, of course)?

I could see the Vietnam/Jungle Usage, but it's an up close an personal weapon. Breaching doors and Close Quarters in a Hostage rescue situation for Flint. Trench/Tunnel Warfare for Falcon. Is there someone else equipped with a Shotgun? I guess Recoil's Shotgun attachment would be used like Falcon's? How did Billy from Predator use his? (Predator had so many influences on GIJOE. Muskrat's would be the same as Falcon.
There is some appeal for Combat Shotgun use in Jungle Warfare, which we are not seeing these days, but in the wake of Vietnam, and throughout the 80's where we saw a lot of Vietnam War movies, the appeal seemed to be still there.

Muskrat having a shotty makes sense slogging around swamps.
Recoil's main gun is an M16/M203 ain't it? |

It's also a good egress weapon for helicopter pilots.

Oh you're right. I could have sworn his was with the Shotgun attachment. I wonder who's M16/Shotgun I am thinking of, like Billy from Predator.

My only problem with that is it's somewhat unrealistic. (Yeah, I know how funny that sounds with this property.) If you are a martial artist who trains his whole life in many forms of unarmed combat, are you really going to be taken down by someone who hasn't? Sure, S.E.A.L.s are the toughest-of-the-tough, but most have not trained their whole lives at being that. I've always had a problem with the "Unbeatable U.S. soldier" can take down a life-time warrior. Oh well... heh... That's just me...
Plus, the ninja would just hide and kill you from cover. You'd never even know it until you were dead. That's kind of the point of being a ninja. Ninjas for whatever training they do, they are still human. They aren't bulletproof. A lot of their methods were more effective in a time of greater belief in the supernatural, when people were truly afraid of the dark. Thermal imaging devices make it a lot harder to hide in the shadows.

The issue is what are you spending a lifetime training for. There are black belts out there that can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag; because, they rarely train against someone outside their system or someone fully committed to taking them down.

I thought Storm Shadow was a great character, back when he was the only ninja--well him and a few red ninjas--and SE was still a commando. Had they left it at that, it would've been a cool peripheral element but then it became the core of GI Joe down the road and they added Ninja Force and Scarlett was a ninja and the glut of ninjas weakened the story because you can't create suspense when all of your characters have super ninja powers.
