According to the US Army website, the chute replacing the M4 has a max load of 450lbs (Military Freefall Advanced Ram Air Parachute System (MFF ARAPS) RA-1 | USAASC). So that 325lbs figure is likely based on a safety figure relative to max load, rather than to any fitness standard. I think pilots face similar restrictions based on ejection seat capabilities rather than fitness/body type standards.

Awhile back I tried to determine if it was feasible to have a Joe equipped with a mini gun like Blaine from Predator. The advantage over an M240 would be the high rate of fire but a rate of 2000-6000 rpm would be impractical for a machine gunner because he'd eat up so much ammo and he can only carry so much. So let's say Heavy Duty has an XM214 (GE Six-Pak) set for 1000 rpm. That's 27 lbs plus 7.5-lb motor and 3-lb feeder for 37.5 pounds. Top it off with a 24-lb man-portable ammo cassette holding 500 rounds of 5.56mm. So he's hauling 51 pounds of armament, plus a basic combat load of 45 lbs. An assistant could carry the second ammo pack so the team would have 1000 rounds or 1 minute of suppressive fire. An M240B gunner with 400 rounds of 7.62mm would need to carry roughly 56 pounds plus his basic load, so it seems possible.

best fire-support weapon is something like an L-86 LSW or the MG36, that's an assault rifle with a slightly longer barrel and a drum mag instead of a banana type. doesn't add much overall weight, faster reloading times.

Possible? Yes. Practical? No. Weight considerations aside, you also have to think about ergonomics. The underhand grip and lack of any shouldering and stabilizing feature (like a stock and a tripod) for a "man-portable" minigun similar to the one used in the Predator film makes it largely impossible to use for more precise, aimed fires (which will be required from time to time from a weapons section). At full auto without a stock and a tripod, the recoil would be unmanageable, I imagine, even if the firing rate would be reduced to 1000 rounds per minute, if not outright hazardous to the gunner. It's just a radioulnar subluxation waiting to happen.

I'd be inclined to keep the micro gun or mini gun for a vehicle.
As for the difference between a 7.62 MMG and 5.56 LMG or auto-rifle, it probably depends on the mission and what you expect to need. For range, penetration, and overall punch, you need the MMG (be it a 240, M60, MG3 etc). But for a quick op, the lighter weapon might suffice. That was the principle behind the old Stoners, which the SEALs loved and everyone else hated. I've heard mixed things about the L-86 - fantastically accurate on single shot, but awkward ergonomics, and the box mag doesn't have the capacity for sustained fire. |

A tripod and three-man machine gun team would be ideal and it wouldn't be a precision weapon. More like a "scare you shitless, keep your head down" weapon. It's a stretch but this is GI Joe we're talking about. :-) I think the weight also negates much of the recoil. Check this out:

For anything else - I'll take anything else. I don't need million-dollar-soldiers to scare someone shitless. I can do that with an 18 year old kid with bad taste in music, a history of poor relationships, and a budding taste in chew. And I'll still have a few rounds left over to deal with the counter-attack. |
