Interesting comments about Shipwreck. Gunner's mate and machinist's mate, at least a few years back, were both feeder rates for SEAL. But, the training pipelines for the two would make it hard to get both for one person. It isn't like going to Airborne School to get parachute qualified and then Scuba school, a sailor would go to "A" school, then go to the fleet, and the Navy has tests for each rating, so you would have to pass the test for both gunner's mate and machinist's mate, and you would have to have accrued experience on a ship doing those jobs to pass the test. Gunner's mate then SEAL, or machinist mate then SEAL, would make the most sense. A machinist's mate could be placed on a patrol boat or SWCC boat as the engineer, but also mans a gun when he isn't maintaining the engines, but that would make him a MM(SWCC) not a machinist's mate and gunner's mate. Although, and these things change all the time, I think a SWCC boat would have a dieselman as the engineer, not an machinist mate.

Some of those 1997-98 filecards are so cringe worthy, especially Shipwreck v3. If I recall, they were written / updated by two Joe fans (David Lane & Thomas Wheeler) and not Hasbro employees. To be fair though, it was probably a combination of doing what they were told and they were probably still pretty young at the time.
I think Shipwreck works better as a SWCC too. I use him as a Team 6 / DEVGRU Grey (Boat Team) operator to keep that SEAL connection. I am curious on how you are working logistics and such for your Boat Team. For example if the Joe Team needs to deploy to a river somewhere in South America (or wherever) who would transport the needed boats down there? Do they rely on USAF assets or something in house? I am finding logistics and transportation a critical element in defining my Joes. Also in regards to Shipwreck being slated as a SWCC how are you filling your SCUBA Troop? As it is the Joes do not have a lot of SCUBA-qualifed members. With mine I am grasping at straws trying to fill even one 16-man SCUBA Troop. lol |

Not everything needs to be in house. For example, Delta has two C5 Galaxies at Pope Air Field on standby at all times to deploy a platoon (with Little Birds) anywhere in the world in a hurry if needed. This is coordinated through JSOC. They are just Air Force assets.

I would guess they would always be relatively near an airbase or two. I would imagine the boats, tanks, trucks, jeeps are all stored on the various Supply ships that make up the Military Sealift command. Some are even civilian operated. Theres a group off the Red Sea, one of Singapore. But those ships hold tanks, humvees, and even more clandestine equipment if necessary.

Definitely agree not everything needs to be in house. I am also trying to place my fixed-wing pilot Joes. I may make them not officially part of the Joe team but rather as the pilots of any dedicated USAF transport planes the Joes have access to. One of the other considerations is how far away is the Joe Team's base from the nearest airfield. I would imagine they would have to be rather close if an emergency arose and they needed to get out ASAP. That brings me back to having a dedicated Boat Team, would the Joes need a base located next to a body of water? Or are the boats they use always packed away on say a C-5 Galaxy waiting for the next crisis?

I like to think all my pilots are also Skyhawk pilots. Aerodynamics aside, I see Skyhawks as an indispensable forward deployed weapon for the Joes. I don't see all Joes having the ability to fly them, so all the Skyhawk are flown by the Joe pilots. Like Ace has his own Skyhawk, and Slipstream, etc. When would they be flying Fighter jets? Invasions. Battle of Bezheen, invasion of Cobra Island, sure, but like the first Gulf War, after a few days Air Superiority is established. Then would do they do? Bombing missions, so Dogfight and Skystriker have a mission but the Skystrikers and Conquests seem ill-suited. But if they had a way to engage the enemy they would. So Park the fighters, and Switch to more ground support missions.
Ace, Slipstream, Air-Raid are really the main ones, but I also have Payload, Moondancer, Marrissa, Ghosthawk, Air-Raid v1(who I need to rename) Hot-Jets, Spaceshot. Ghostrider seems well suited to spy missions, and Countdown is an Air Liaison Officer in my Verse. Barrel-Roll is another one I flip flop on.

Skystrikers being based on the F-14 airframe are perfectly capable of carrying out ground attack missions. Indeed, they bomb the undersea bunker that triggers the earthquake to create Cobra Island in the comics and Marvel UK had Skystrikers engage in air strikes in two stories: Skystrike (they destroy a Cobra airfield using JP233 runway denial weapons) and Ancient Relics, the Transformers crossover.
The Conquest carried and dropped an LGB in its first story when Snake Eyes infiltrates the Terrordrome in Sierra Gordo disguised as Flint. |
