Dial Tone's shoulder patch is from the 10th Special Forces Group.

What is it with the Joes Green Berets not wearing actual green Berets. They don't still use that pin do they? Dial-Tone was never characterized anything more than a radio guy until the Mission Brazil convention set.
What about Recondo? I always figured he was sporting a 1St Cavalry patch. As for Recondo, this seems a good bet, even if the shape is marginally off: Recondo School Vietnam | 25th Infantry Division Vietnam CRIPS Recon For more on patches (though I think some are wrong): Real Military Patches Used on GI Joe Figures - JCWiki |

I wonder what color Berets Delta Force guys wear? I would presume when a guy earns his Green Beret he would want to keep it, but I think Delta Guys wear a Green Beret as well. If they cycle back to the Rangers or even another unit, I suppose they have to switch back to Black.
I know I had seen that site before. Recondo's name is definitely inspired by the Recondo school in Vietnam, but his patch isn't that one. His is more of a shield than an arrowhead. Incidentally Gung-Ho is listed as Recondo on his V1 filecard also having attended Recondo school. MAC-V Recondo school was in Nha Trang Vietnam. Gung-Ho went to Vietnam. Probably met Stalker and Snake-Eyes there before it closed in 1970.

Delta wear (or wore) black berets. Look at images of Gordon & Shugart (one is here: Badass of the Week: Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart and here: American Heroes: Delta Force Operators | US Patriot Tactical Blog) - black beret with a red flash. Just like Flint.
Back to Recondo, his patch definitely isn't 1st Cav. The line runs the wrong way and there's no horse's head. |

On a different note, there are some interesting profiles here (this may have come up before): https://army.togetherweserved.com/ar...tExt&ID=148788
Down the right hand column there's a box titled "43 brothers assigned to this unit." Some of the profiles are pretty interesting. |

I don't think anyone in the US Army wears black berets any more. I remember reading on Wikipedia that some general instituted everyone except USASF and the 82nd Airborne (and maybe 101st Division, not sure) wearing black berets. That pissed off the Rangers as black berets were their thing, so they swapped to sandy tan ones like UKSF wear. Berets were then extremely unpopular with the troops not used to them and when some new general took over, he scrapped them and the current uniforms have caps instead. AFAIK, the Rangers stuck with the tan berets.

I think the Black Berets are still part of the grooming standard. I need to pay closer attention when I see army guys walking around.
Back to Recondo. I'm not sure what it is supposed to be. My 10 year old mind automatically associated that patch with 1St Cavalry, but it surely isn't. I wonder what Rudat was going for: https://arealamericanbook.wordpress....sentation-art/

I know Recondo is meant to be American, but he has a sort of Cold War- era British, South African, or Australian look to him.
Similarly, Dusty has a sort of French thing going on, with his FAMAS and France's long history in Chad. |

Yeah I thought the same thing. I remember thinking Recondo was Australian and his rifle was something else more European, besides it being a M-14. Especially since the mention of the Swedish K. I mean who in the US military even gets to use those except Special Forces?

when Recondo was released in the UK in 1985, he was made an Australian. I missed that era, so I didn't know, but when he appeared in Marvel UK's AF reprints, I automatically assumed he was an Aussie. It's the brim-pinned-up bush-hat.
Dusty was also made an Australian in 1987. |
