So what's the average time frame to make E5 in the Army? I know you can go into basic as an E2, and even an E3 depending on one's background, but how many years is typical in the army to make E5? Six years?

The absolute min is 2 years before making E4, right?
So could you make E5 in as little as three years? |

I think experience would matter more for the Joe team then rank.
Someone like Repeater, horrible barracks soldier but excellant field soldier, probably wouldn't be that high of a rank.

True, but I was just wondering because you would have to be an experienced, proficient soldier to make an elite team like the Joes, so I would assume that these guys would accelerate through the ranks a little faster than some.

It's the "experienced, proficient" part that makes me think they have at least 10 years of combat experience, if not more.
Yeah, these guys moved thru the ranks quickly, which is how they got noticed since their deeds = rank movement. So yeah, without the no-'Nam retcon, the Joes would be 30 (for the new recruits) to mid-60s. With the majority in the 40s.

That's a good point about Stalker and Snake Eyes serving more than one tour. I guess I envisioned Hawk as a bit younger because he struck me as kind of a younger colonel when the team formed. Like maybe his ability to rise to the rank at such a young age contributed to his posting on the Joes.
What about Mainframe? He's gotta be up there, right? How about some of the higher-ranking officers like Col. Courage, Payload, and Skystriker? What is the youngest one can become a colonel? |

Well if Duke went SF in 1969 he would have at least been an E4 then, and let's just assume that he was the most exceptional, combat-proven soldier for his age. So he could have been 20 or 21 and 14 years later when he was promoted to 1st Sgt in 1983, he would be about 35, which is plausible.
But guys like Grunt and Flash and Short-Fuze, even if they had served at the end of Nam in '74 when they were 18, I would find it unlikely that they would still be E4s by 1982, you know? So I doubt they served in Nam. Stalker and Snake Eyes are at least E5s, and we know they served time. So Grand Slam, who's an E5 is plausible. |

It's possible to make Lt Col by the time you turn forty, if you have a great record. So at least mid-forties to make full bird Col.
