But this brings up an interesting question. Has anybody ever tried to guess at the ages of the Joes. I mean before they were retconned. I know Duke's original filecard says he enlisted in 1967. If we assume he was 18 or 19, that would make him about 34 or 35 when he joined the Joes. Since he's probably one of the older memebrs of the team, can we kind of extrapolate rough ages for the rest? Do we care?
Hawk would probably be the oldest, say in his early 30s during 'Nam. Stalker and Snake-Eyes would have been early 20s in 'Nam. So say 25 in '75. So they'd be getting close to theirs 60s. Not all Joes were in 'Nam. They would have had to have been in mid-20s when joined the Joes. Say they enlisted right out of high school, 18. They would have had to have been serving for awhile in order to get good enough to qualify for the Joe team, so think at least 5-6 years of service, probably more. So mid-20s when joined the Joe team. So the Joes would range in age from 30 to 70.

I'd say, given his rank, roughly the same age if not a year or two older. |

Yeah alot of Joes that served in Nam would be in their 50s and even 60s right now. Thankfully comic book characters never age because Duke would be beating down Cobras with a walker and strangling them with his ostomy pouch.

About the same age.
I put Hawk so high because of his rank. He's a Colonel when the Joe team is formed in the '80s, so he had to have been at least a LT during 'Nam, so figured he would have been late 20s to early 30s. I don't see Stalker/SE being one tour only guys. At the time of the "accident" in 'Nam, when their LRRP patrol is attacked, I would say they were on their 2nd or 3rd Tour, so mid-20s at least? There's alot of Joes, like Alpine and Spearhead, that did civilian work prior to joining the Army, so they would have been at least in early '30s when joined the Joe team. Lady Jaye, probably late '20s to early '30s when joined Joe because of the amount of education she had prior to joining. Flint would easily have been early '30s if not middle '30s when joined because of the amount of his special ops history/work.

Which is why DDP retconned 'Nam out of the Joe continuity, to "fix" the age problem.

Yeah, I think Falcon was probably a bit young to have served in Vietnam. If he was a 1st Lt. in 1987, he'd be maybe mid-late 20s. So that would put his birth at some point in the early 1960s. There's a good chance his father served, maybe even with Duke.
And as for the original 13, I've always kind of thought alot of them were also a little young. Hawk, Stalker, and Snake-Eyes were obviously old enough. And I kind of assumed (maybe innaccurately) that Stalker and Snake-Eyes were in Nam towards the end, in like 73 or 74, and that they were like 19 at the time. Maybe Rock N Roll was old enough. But the rest of the guys and Scarlett seem too young to me. Steeler was only a 2nd Lt. so he was probably 22 or 23 in 1982. But this brings up an interesting question. Has anybody ever tried to guess at the ages of the Joes. I mean before they were retconned. I know Duke's original filecard says he enlisted in 1967. That's a good point about Stalker and Snake Eyes serving more than one tour. I guess I envisioned Hawk as a bit younger because he struck me as kind of a younger colonel when the team formed. Like maybe his ability to rise to the rank at such a young age contributed to his posting on the Joes.
What about Mainframe? He's gotta be up there, right? How about some of the higher-ranking officers like Col. Courage, Payload, and Skystriker? |

I was reading an article the other day about the B-2 pilots and to be entrusted with a billion dollar piece of equipment requires some sense of good judgement that only comes with age and maturity. How else to you make a 27hour non-stop flight to Baghdad and drop 10,000lbs of precision ordinance and then turn around and go home in time to take your kids to school. Those guys are in their 50s. A crew of two is like a Lt colonel and a Colonel, both 50 or close to it. My balls just got smaller just thinking about how much a badass those guys are.

I think that any Joe would be at least 30 or so when posted to the Joe team.
I think they'd need at least 5-6 years of combat experience after their initial 4 years. So at least around 10 years of experience.
