Always thought a modern PoC-styled re-working of Dial-Tone (preserving the black beret) would make sense as a USAF JTAC, if they weren't going to go the SOF/SF route (it helps distinguish him from Breaker, anyway, who I think makes more sense as an SF Commo sergeant because of his fluency in multiple languages). Before the black beret became standard-issue in the Army, Air Force JTACs were the only guys besides the 75th RR who were authorized to wear the black beret, and the line in Dial-Tone's original filecard that says "no artillery support, no airstrikes, no medvac, no extraction, no NOTHING! The cavalry ain't comin' until the man with the radio tells 'em to," perfectly summed up what a USAF joint terminal attack controller does (direct fires from artillery and close air support, assists pathfinders with tactical air traffic control, serves as a field radio unit, etc.). |

Well, when Dial-Tone was being designed (likely in the early 1980s, since the figure was released in 1986), the black beret was a hallmark of the battalions that would eventually become the 75th Ranger Regiment. I don't know if that was Rudat's intent, but it's certainly possible.

Wow, alot of chatter this time. Almost 10 pages since sunday.
Love the idea of Dialtone being being JTAC, Stretcher a PJ, Ripcord part of a CCT/PJ team sent to sanitize a crash site and rescue the pilots, Pathfinder in 10th Weather Squadron, Hawk as a Missile Commander and radar officer and a possible former pilot (Marvel #4 and #13) in the Air Force. I feel the need for the Joe team to have increased differences in it's military services make-up. How Hasbro has it, It's an Army thing with only a handful of Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. We even have problem of the later Joes are just a clone of the Original. (ie Breaker, Dialtone... Short Fuze, Downtown... Zap, Bazooka... Hawk, Duke... Gung-ho, Leatherneck, Sgt Slaughter... etc). So yeah, Im all for having different services to equal out the 'playing field' of the other military services. Talking about Sgt Slaughter, I finally got one.

Don't get me wrong, I think more services being represented would be a great thing, but I'm just not reassigning certain Joes to other branches in my Joeverse.
An Army-centric Joe Team is pretty much how it was created; that's the way I like it. I wouldn't mind a few more Marines, and some USAF Special Operators, but for me, most of the Joes will ALWAYS be in the Army. Now, I readily admit: I'm biased... I'm an Army Brat, and I'm an Army Officer. But that's the way the comic always read to me - all the main leadership was Army (with the exception of Keel-Haul, but he was a fair minor character) and they worked on an Army Post. Granted, the use of so many fixed-wing aircraft is certainly not in keeping with the Army, however, having a moveable space shuttle at their disposal isn't in keeping with any branch of service. It's still a kids toy. But as far as the way things work: Op Orders, Chain-of-Command, SOP, etc... it's all U.S. Army. It's not that I don't think there should be members from other services. I just think they should add new characters from those other services. Old characters like Dial-Tone... he's always been Army; always will be. Sure we can debate about abiguities like Bullhorn or Mace, but there's really not a question about a lot of these guys... Hasbro's default rule for the Joe team has always been: Unless stated otherwise, the Joes are members of the U.S. Army. We've spent a lot of time looking for cannonical evidence for a lot of these guys. We've done a lot of searching through the comics, yojoe.com, filecards, etc. We've made reasonable arguments for qualifications (recondo as SF is a classic example), and we've even gone so far as to ask Larry Hama on occasion. But the rule has always been: Unless stated otherwise, the Joes are all from the U.S. Army. Just my opinoin, fellas.

I know DT is Army. I figured him for Ranger the minute I saw him, but was always disappointed when they never added a little something to the filecard. Have we ever figured what the patch on his arm is from or the the chevron on his beret? At the time he came out only Rangers were wearing Black berets?
Still I got a second DT that I kitbashed into an Air Force Security MP, because the Air Force was also sporting the Black Berets. I would never say reinvent a character as something else. I just say make a new one. That is my favorite thing about Joes. I don't even care if they are carbon copies of the guys they replace, just make new ones as they go.

I'm with Loose Cannon on that. (yes, the annoying canuck is back). More characters are always good, especially if they fill holes where there aren't many.
A question for you guys, do any of you know of an online resource to look up real-world firearms by image rather than anme? I'm trying to connect my joes to real weapons and wikipedia is not the most effective way to do this if you don't already know what a gun is called. |
