I always thought the Joes needed at least one primary pilot for each aircraft type in their inventory, along with some additional aircraft types: 1 heavy transport pilot (C-130, someone other than Wild Bill), 1 assault helicopter pilot (even though the Joes never had a Huey or Blackhawk), 1 heavy assault helicopter pilot (Tomahawk, Lift-Ticket), 1 attack helicopter pilot (Apache/Cobra, Wild Bill), 1 fighter pilot (Skystriker, Ace), 1 VTOL pilot (Harrier), and 1 light assault helicopter pilot (AH-6 or MH-6, use Dogfight or Windmill). I don't even recognize such aerial nightmares as the Mudfighter, Retaliator, Battle Copter, or Skystorm as flyable aircraft. No thanks but I'd rather fly checks in an overweight, underpowered Seneca with ragged out engines through a level-5 thunderstorm at night. Now throw some actual wings on the Sky Hawk (and maybe a Ballistic Recovery System like the CAPS on a Cirrus) and I might take it up in the pattern for a test run or two.

Even as a kid I felt that episode insulted my intelligence. Even I, not knowing anything about the military or ninjas or anything, knew that there were better people on the Joe team then Wet-Suit.

Name doesn't work, as that is a fighter pilot's name, but the look does work.

Even more glaringly, what was the use of having "laser troopers" like Flash and Sci-Fi if everybody was using laser rifles anyway?
It's a decent look considering how badly it could have come out. I think the look goes back to the early 1990s though... I remember the 1992 Capcom NES game (GI Joe: The Atlantis Factor) had him wearing a garrison cap on the cover. I think it was based on the talking battle commander or whatever version of Hawk.

I never know where to place guys like Flash. Special Weapons? Laser Targeting? JTAC? Mechanical unit that uses laser tools? CBR unit? Sniper/Long-range Rifle unit?

From a design perspective though, I think a "realistic" Flash would still work best as an infantry guy who uses a rifle equipped with an optical distraction laser attachment or possibly a fire support man (the guys who use laser designators/rangefinders to guide smart munitions launched by artillery). |

The problem is the toy is pictured with a cancelled Sigma 6 jet in the launch position. Even with such a small jet, there's not much launch room. The ROC Skysweeper is the only jet that would look halfway decent on the deck. They didn't show any details(consoles, chairs, etc.) on the shelves so I wonder what other play value it would have.

Grand Slam ends up being similar but attached to a Forward Observer unit that's made up of Barrel Roll, Starduster and Grand Slam. My "glider" team. Does anyone use the HAL?
