That 12-inch Flint really looks a lot like Falcon. Sort of makes you wonder if 1987's Falcon figure was supposed to be a new version of Flint, but Hasbro decided to make him a new character altogether (probably thinking they could sell more toys if he was "new" instead of a returning character). The similarities between the two in terms of certain design elements (the beret, the SF background, the shotgun as the primary weapon) really gets me speculating...
... although it's likely coincidence more than anything else. Looking back, I think Falcon was just the new "leader" character for that year. Design wise, the beret is certainly reminiscent of Flint, however, Duke was SF before Flint ever showed up, he just didn't have a beret. So in keeping with the previous 2 "Field Commanders", Falcon was SF - only this time they bothered to get the beret color correct. And yes, he looks like Flint, but his file card reads a lot like Duke's: look at the language proficiency. However, his name "Falcon" is a bird of prey... like "Hawk". Obviously there have always been rumors that Hasbro toyed with the idea of making him Hawk's son. Regardless, the bird of prey name ties him to a leadership role on the Joe team. Falcon, much like Captain Grid-Iron, is a "leader" character from the late 80's/early 90's... The cartoon fizzled in such a way that those 2 never got the treatment they deserved. Falcon was awesome in the comics. He wasn't there much, but he was great when he was. Look at how Hasbro treated Falcon. He had a great sculpt and Paint, and he led Night Force AND the Sonic Fighters... that's 2 Command slots! Flint at that point had only led the Eco-Warriors. Duke had led Tiger Force, but Falcon, in his short time, led 2 sub-Team... one of which, is arguably the best/toughest sub-team: Night Force. Falcon has been one of my favorites since he first came out. To this day, the idea that he's one of the few Company Grade Combat Officers makes him a key player in my Joeverse. He and Claymore are the only 2 Official SF Officers below the rank of General in the Joeverse... and Claymore was JUST made official. His role in the cartoon has always haunted him: a lot of fans think of him a an idiot, or a renegade, or a screw-up, or drug addict. All of that is garbage: he only showed up in the Movie and DiC... those were the worst examples of G.I. Joe animation.

I remember when I was a kid, and I first saw the picture of Falcon (this was in like '86 or '87), I thought: "They're coming out with a new FLINT!!!"

It could have easily made my top 10 25th Anniversary figures (removable man-pack radio FTW!) save for one unforgivable aspect: those damned "Duke arms" with their arthritic range of motion. The only way the figure could point his shotgun forward was if he were to hold it with his arm outstretched, like it was some sort of giant pistol. I was looking at some of Flints Filecards. His first has him as a Warrant Officer with a pay grade of a E-6. I think there are a few others as well. In 1986 he is the Tiger Force Warrant Officer,
with a pay grade of a W-3. His 2010 Convention Filecard has him at a pay grade of a W-2. His secondary specialist is Infantry(11x). There is a quote at the bottom of the card that says I`m not arrogant,I just always look good doing my job. |

Edit: Not sure if I stuck this in an earlier post or not, but here are the UK Marvel comics, give them a read, they were imo well written, especially the way they fitted in with the US reprints (which unfortunately you can't see as they have been pulled out, but I can probably come up with some issue cross references if anyone's interested: http://www.bloodforthebaron.com/comics/maf/index.html Quote:

Look at what I found while watching 'Spy Troops' on my new tv. An odd place for "Duke's" officer rank to be found.

Funny thing about Falcon, too is that he practically mirrors Stalker in a lot of things as it relates to their filecards. Both have "Infantry" as their Primary MOS and "Medic" as their secondary MOS, and they are proficient in the same four foreign languages: Arabic, French, Spanish, and Swahili. So yeah, the underlying design behind the character/figure almost seems like a Stalker-Flint hybrid to me.

I think the camo leaves quite a bit to be desired too, I agree with you about the figure, just doesn't work (and not even thinking of the Duke forearms). My feeling is that the problem is the rubbish camo application (with, in second place, the rather sleek lines of his fatigures not really looking much like they belong in a jungle either, unlike the earlier figure, but that's just my opinion.)
A lot of people have critized the figures head... it wasn't terrible, but I just don't think it looked like the original figure's head. Ironically, the Sgt. Stone head looked a lot more like the original Falcon head to me. The paint was terrible. They simply cast most of the parts in OD green and painted a few black stripes on them. It just needed more attention - more effort. I don't know why they only released him as part of a comicpack. They should have spent the time/effort into making him a single card release.

Interesting. I don't think the Spytroops filecard made him as a Captain. I think the filecard still listed him as a First Sgt.
