I got Bellomo's book last night. Read up to 85. Got alot more codenames to use in my stories.
Sounds like Hama tried to have the conversation with Hasbro about not making replacement Joes (Footloose over Grunt) and just reusing the same team members, even giving some additional training. So that means if Flash would most likely have been Airtight. Interesting. |

Hama expressed the desire to send the originals for more training. Flash was the original CBR.
Reading between the lines seems like Hama didn't want to dilute the comic with more characters. Probably figured he'd have to shove older ones to the back to make room for the new guys.

It would have to be VSTOL I think. Anything else might be impractical. But who knows I suppose Submarines can be huge? The only real consideration defensesive armorment when sitting on the service launching aircraft. But maybe they just launch and go back under the surface.

I think the biggest problem would be how you store the aircraft, that Japanese submarine carrier looks like it stored the aircraft with folded wings in separate external chambers. I suppose you could do the same nowadays with a significantly larger chamber, but you'd not get many on the sub. Alternatively you have one large area where you store the aircraft, but sealing that, and counteracting the buoyancing of such a large volume of air would be difficult I imagine.
Of course, technically, a helicopter-only aircraft carrier submarine would be more properly called an amphibious assault submarine. Another alternative would be for the aircraft carrier-submarine to carry turboprop or piston engine fixed-wing aircraft designed for landing and taking off of the water's surface (either floatplanes or more versatile amphibian aircraft). Again, this would eliminate the need for a launch catapult and a runway. The submarine would just need a way to be able to transport the aircraft from its internal storage bay to the open water and vice versa (maybe via a ramp and/or a collapsible crane). Sure, piston engine and turboprop driven planes might look quaint by modern sea-based aerial warfare systems standards, but turboprops (like the OV-10 Bronco and the Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano) are still the mainstay of current insurgency and counterinsurgency air warfare, and I think would be right up Cobra's alley. |

And speaking of the OV-10 Bronco, I actually consider it to be a a better modern-day and realistic analogue of the Cobra Rattler than the A-10 Thunderbolt II (a.k.a. Warthog).
If we take the stance that Cobra is a legally recognized corporate organization, I just can't see the US government allowing them to use DoD-exclusive technology (such as the A-10). And even then, a single A-10 would be horribly expensive (around $12 million), even for a large-ish corporation. A whole squadron (never mind a wing) of the aircraft would probably bankrupt a company unless they were being paid as part of the standing air force of a nation. The OV-10 Bronco seems more like it would fit Cobra's needs: a relatively affordable (~$400000 per unit), small, low-maintenance, and agile ground attack/reconnaissance STOL with a proven track record in "small wars" in the deserts and jungles of the developing world. For the cost of one A-10, a mercenary group could get two squadrons of OV-10s (about 30 aircraft!). |

I remember in the Comics when Ripcord and Lady Jaye first appeared they went straight to Scarlett and Grunt and told them they were their replacements. Then Hawk announced that most of the old Joes (apart from Snake Eyes) were on desk duty in the 2nd PIT.

I remember the "desk duty" but not the replacement part. Any idea what issue?

Issue #32, IIRC. Scarlett and Lady Jaye get into a little verbal catfight over some comment one or the other made.

I believe Scarlett was reading Lady Jaye the riot act for "stumbling" into a secured area and when asked who they were LJ said "We're your replacements."
