Was wondering if anyone knew definitively which early characters Hamma created that were later turned into figures, and which were of Hasbro origin.
Like I know the Original 13 were hasbro. I guess the idea of Cobra was originaly given to them by Marvel, but they were still responsible for Cobra the Enemy, Cobra Officer, and Commander. The next would be my first example and that is the Baroness. So even though the Baroness WAS made as a figure, she appeared in the comic in like 82 and wasnt a figure until 84, so she's definately a Hamma-created character to me. So I was wondering about Destro. . . and even Storm Shadow. Anyone know of any else? And by this I mean the original ARAH run. Not any anniversary, comic pack, or 25th or something like that. |

Hama didn't really create any of them. He was given pictures of what they would look like, and then he would write the filecards. So, you could say he created the characters for pretty much all of the early Joes (I think he stopped writing the cards around '87-'88, but I don't remember), but he didn't design them.

I dont think that can be the case... the Baroness was in issue one some two years before she was released as a figure. I doubt Hasbro had planned her that far ahead.

Baroness was a Hama creation.
The rest were joint Hama and Hasbro. Hama gave them the personality and most of the names.

That's true, Baroness was made as a figure because of the comic, but even then, I'd guess that Herb Trimpe designed her early look, and a Hasbro designer probably designed her toy look.
My point being that pretty much all of the GI Joe characters were a team effort, but Hama did the majority of the character development. |

Hama stopping writing the file cards after 1991 (or more like Hasbro decided to save money and do it themselves).
Destro was Hasbro's name, not Hama's...who pitched names like Warmaster or something. It's said Crystal Ball was influenced by Stephen King's son's desire for a magician type character (his son was big into GI JOE...you can find GI JOE mentioned in THE TOMMY KNOCKERS), and the card was said to be written by King. A Hama bio exists and was seen in a Marvel Age issue. Though, I don't know how much stock to put into wikipedia articles. "Marvel would also suggest the inclusion of female Joes in the toyline, and to include them with the vehicles (as Hasbro again worried they wouldn't sell on their own)." As far as Hasbro big shots were concerned females didn't sell well enough to keep making in the long run, which is why Jinx was the last addition. That's what Hasbro people themselves had said. Proposed female additions were shot down until Ninja Force Scarlett. |

Well, there are a lot of characters Hamma did create that were never figures but made it in the comic, like Scarface, Dr Venom, General Flagg (I mean never as in the 80s run), so I can't see why Hasbro didnt look at something Hamma had in the comic like the Baroness, and say, "He's popular in the comic, I bet he'll sell well as a figure" like Storm Shadow I bet. The only tie to Ninjas was hinted at with Snake Eye's background, but it wasnt until Storm Shadow appear did the whole Ninja thing come out. Yeah I could see Hasbro just making a (white?) ninja figure for the heck of it... but I can't help if Hamma might have said, "I've got an idea for this guy" so I would credit him.
