The original classic HISS is not a tank in the real sense, or at least not a Main Battle Tank. It's more of an infantry support/recon vehicle somewhere in between a British Scopion/Scimitar and a German Wiesel. So it isn't really design for head to head comabt with enemy tanks but it could be very effective at all kinds of other tasks.
Oddly enough, the prototype H.I.S.S. was a two-seater, with larger guns, attack pod launcher (they pop open, and fire at targets), and their treads can be switched-out for large wheels or a "tri-star" wheel arrangement. This was an unproduced concept for the toy line (see here, and here), but it seems right to make it a canon concept, given that in real life, prototype models tend to be better or more elaborate the the production model. It seem logical that the early H.I.S.S. was too elaborate and expensive for Cobra's use, so M.A.R.S. down-scaled it too just an armored infantry fighting vehicle. Quote:
There is a crew of two - a driver and a gunner. If two guys can pilot an attack chopper then I say two guys can crew a HISS Tank effectively. Which of them is in charge? I like to think that could depend on which of them is more experienced or has higher rank. In WWII the pilot was in charge of allied bomber crews, but in German bomber crews it was the guy of the highest rank - perhaps the radio operator. Both systems have their benefits.
In the HISS, the driver is better protected but the gunner has better situational awareness. I say the HISS Drivers are trained to drive and command, leaving the guuners job as less of a specialised slot, but there's could be HISS tanks that are crewed by other kinds of troops. Or maybe if a HISS unit is operating in the arctic, a HISS Driver could be commanded by a Snow Serpent in the gunner seat. |

Fascinating early sketches I hadn't seen before. Interesting to see the two crewmen in the Mark 0 version look very much like a well known ninja/commando. I wonder if the SE concept we know now started as a Cobra troop type, and if so how he became a good guy? Does anyone have any insight?
I do like the idea of a HISS version that uses wheels rather than tracks - if anything the way it is raised up could be somewhat reminiscent of modern MRAP designs. What bothers me about the classic HISS is how exposed the gunner is. The HISS II is a great improvement but the large cannons always looked too big to me even when I was a kid. Incidently, here's my own personalized take on the HISS, in which I corrected some of these issues. Please add any comments on that thread so as not to hijack this one. I just thought I'd share for anyone who missed it the first time around. http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...hiss-tank.html |

It's interesting how much the early Hiss sketches look like the Hiss 2.

Yes indeed. I actually prefer the smaller guns on the Mark 0 over the oversized ones on the HISS 2.
