So I collected Joes as a kid, say....84-92, when my dad told me to "grow up and stop playing with toys."
In 2008, with the re-release of the 25th anniversary, I bought the 5-packs at Target. My (now ex) wife started buying me a figure or two as a lark, a little surprise. By the time she left in the fall of '09, I had discovered ebay. GI Joe has since become a minor obsession, and I'm working on one of each character, one of each vehicle, some troop builders, etc. About 5 months ago, I met a girl with a 9-year-old boy and a 6 year old daughter. At first, he wasn't interested in my GI joes, except when I left a 100% complete Cobra Hammerhead out on a table, still with box, to be assembled and shelved. He enthusiastically helped me assemble it like the picture (I have early-onset Parkinsons and am legally blind) and then wandered off to play with his Angry Birds. About two weeks ago, he found a 1986 Serpentor in a box and demanded to know about him. A week ago, I found him with four of my GI Joe trade paperbacks, up on top of my bed/jungle gym in the rafters, reading about the Battle for Cobra Island. I took him for her overnight to ease some holiday stress. This morning I found him tossing the Convention paratrooper down on top of the Fort America....and then (showing me how the floor was the beach and the bed was a cliff and the blue carpet was the ocean....) he shoved a 30th anniversary Crimson HISS forward into the fray Some machine gun noises later, Serpentor was tossing the body of a dead Crimson Horseman to the beach, hopping into the HISS tank, and yelling: Onward, to victory for Cobra! Crush the Joes. Get Snake Eyes!" .... When he saw me in the doorway, silence descended. He wandered over, all politeness and grave intent, and handed me the Retaliation HISS piled into the box marked "To Open." He asked if the Cobras colud get reinforcements. I handed him my pocket knife and he ran off to save the day. A few minutes later, I heard big booming and the vocalized "rattatattat" of a nine-year-old imitating a giant Gattling gun. As I type this, the words "We need a plane!" are echoing in the background and then a shouted "Whoosh!" I expect that's the custom Skystriker I won at the Iowa Joe Meet-up 2 providing air support. God help me if he figures out the extra storage room is all Joes in crates. Merry Christmas, HissTank. God bless. |

Awesome!
A note along the same line of new Joe fans... I was in church earlier this afternoon for Christmas mass and a kid, about 7, sitting in the pew in front of us had 2 30th Joes with him: POC Wave 3 Duke and POC Snowjob with a Snake Eyes head lol. I nudged my wife to look and she laughed lol. All I thought was a "new" young Joe fan! Thats what we need! |

This morning, I gave my nephew my first Joe vehicle. At first he was like, "It's open already". I had to explain that it was the one I had as a kid and how I wanted him to have it since he has more snow than we ever will in AZ.

These kids are so lucky having an upcoming GI Joe movie on the way! These movies are a little more exciting as kids then as an adult. As an adult we become alot more critical on how a Joe movie should be. As a kid, you just sit back and enjoy the show.
