I know that Gi Joe has many story lines, from Sunbow to comics to various novels. In Star Wars, is it true that the comics, movies and novels all tie in to one MAIN story line. As in they don't contradict each other and all tell one story line? Just wondering if this is true?

In theory, the SW universe ties together pretty well, and is meant to be one cohesive universe. However, there has had to be some pretty serious (and sometimes non-sensical) retconning due to the prequels. Books written before this were pretty much forbidden to discuss the prequel area, but there were tidbits dropped, especially early on when Zahn wrote what I consider the hallmark of SW fiction, the Heir to the Empire saga.
Now the real problem is, Lucas, may he eternally have hemmorhoids for what he did in those prequels, contradicted not only the books (which was his right, I suppose), but his own movies. The most glaring issue is the death of Amidala in childbirth, when Leia tells Luke in ROTJ specifically that she remembers her "real" mother as being "very beautiful, but sad." There are many, many more instances, and his constant tooling with the movies has only made this murkier. |

But the short answer is, yes, it's true.

dbritt is right. It's all one. But, Lucas has said that only the movies are cannon and while he lets people play with his universe if he didn't make a movie about it then it's just speculation on another authors part.

When he remembers his corporate outlook, George's attitude towards the EU is less absolute. Just like with the movies, he's made several conflicting and contradictory statements (or had a couple moments where he's inserted EU "nods" into the films). The only "absolute" is that Lucas reserves the right to overwrite anything that's come before with new media. Which more or less is what's happened with the Clone Wars CGI series, which has steamrolled over TONS of previously established continuity, to the point where Lucasfilm has just thrown up their hands and said "We'll try to sort out the mess once the series is over." |

Basically anything prior to The Phantom Menance and anything after Return Of the Jedi is all one continuity. Everything in the middle is kind of nebulous until the Clone Wars cartoon series ends and it can all be sorted out and "fixed".
For example the Clone Wars made huge holes in the Mandalorian story that Karen Traviss had spent alot of time (like 4 or 5 books) setting up. Traviss' story was awesome. She made a great culture for Fett and his people.

After the Clone Wars stuff though, I think they're going to have a REALLY hard time reconciling these two very, very different and conflicting portraits of that world. |
