I'm still not quite sure how it happened........ Three weeks ago there I was, playing Forgotten Battles, contemplating how I would have set up an airfield and what planes I would want in an early-WWII Pacific theater for the Allies when all of a sudden I start thinking about GI Joe for the first time since 1988. Perhaps a seed was planted just a few days before when I had glanced at the collectibles display case at a local Pawn that was filled with a large number of RoC and PoC figures. Joe just seemed to fit into the whole idea so seamlessly: there was a lot of established characters, a chain of command, equipment, sets, vehicles. The whole airfield idea just morphed into this new objession with GI Joe. Next thing, i hit Google and discovered the word "Army Building" and decided then and there that THAT was something for me.
I visited my parents shortly therafter and recovered old boxes of keepsakes. I remember that my brother and i both had 80's sky-strikers, which had been given away in a garage sale long ago. As had my Dragonfly, my brother's SnowCat and Cyclone, etc. All I had remaining was an old monogram model box full of smalls which I brought home: Some of that isn't Joe, but most if it is. The Devil Fish is complete, and I remember modifying it 25 or so years ago so that it actually floats and varnished it to protect the decals (which were at that time allready fading). Ace's pelvis is cracked, but for some miraculous reason, I have an extra pair of pants for him. Footloose is missing his right thumb, and Hawk his left. I still have a variety of missles that didn't get garage-sale'd, and all those guns were from a Joe accessory kit i had bought as a kid. Over the last few weeks I have stopped by every dept store and pharmacy in the area scrounging for Joes. I have bought: XP-21 Skystriker Black Dragon (x2) Crimson Hiss Rise of Cobra Rip-Attack (x2) [Hey, they were $5 each...] I also hit the pawn shop and scored: Duke (v42 and v28) Snake Eyes (v52 and v35) Flint v12 Bazooka v3 Dusty v14 Destro v23 Storm Shaddow (v23 and v39) While scouring various retailers, I bought: Firefly v23 Iron Gren v8, variation 2 (x2) A couple of notes or observations 1) Where are all the Joes? In my search, I saw a metric crap-ton of Star Wars stuff, with one Target having a clearance on a bunch of Clone troopers. The ratio of Star Wars to GI Joe is typically about 20 to 1. The only things I found in plenty of suppy are Black Dragons and v48 Cobra Commanders (which I didn't buy because he looks like some Dandy on his way to a Phantom of the Opera cult-in) 2) I have designs on assembling an army of Crimson Horseman, but notice that the HISS (when found in retail) sells for about $20, and the complete Horsement themselves are going for almost that much on Ebay. ah well. 3) Anyone use cheap "The Corps" figures or vehicles in your army building? Im considering it just to fill things out a bit by adding Joe/Cobra stickers... Anyway, this is my hello to the forum. Last edited by Ruin; 02-15-2012 at 03:43 AM.. |

Welcome.
May I advise you run away now, before things get out of control any further. If not, don't say we didn't warn you. Welcome!

welcome to the tank. now is actually a great time to get here. a lot of the 25th stuff can be had on the cheap right now. buy up that stuff first. some things (like alpine) will cost crazy money so just stay patient and maybe a situation will present itself there. ask questions about anything you need, the tank is full of people who will help you out. click on my "modern" link below to see what "army building" has done to me. Cobra!!! :P

I don't think I'll be that much of a completist. I am more interested right now in assembling a Joeverse using more-or-less "plausible" vehicles and such. Two big ones I plan on adding eventually are a WHALE and Tomahawk. I have a 25th Ann Scarlett on the way right now... |

good luck with that.
i have left off a lot of the more recent stuff and i dont expect to add many vehicles from retaliation at all, but i made sure to pick up anything that was a straight 25th reissue. Tomahawk and WHALE are two we have been patiently waiting for. We finally got a skystriker, so who knows maybe they will rerelease these others some day as well. i didnt want to wait so i picked up the arah ones for myself. i like that scarlet a lot. she has had a few newer mold releases but i think the original 25th is still superior. shes just real skinny. the Reactive Impact Armor version from ROC is also cool if you re looking for an updated or modern look. (the resolute one has one of the worst face sculpts in history. :P)
