In 1984, my older sister had taken me along when she went to KMart one day and as we passed the toys, there was an endcap of Joes there. I spotted Firefly, and immediately liked him because I was into ninjas then and he looked like a camo ninja. Checking the filecard informed me of his saboteur status, which just made him even cooler to me. My sister said, "I'll buy that for you if you want it." Firefly is still one of my favorite figures.
The following Christmas (1985) my sister was married and her husband knew of my GI Joe collection. So my sister and her husband got me the AWE Striker, the Snow Cat, and the Silver Mirage for Christmas. They were my favorite gifts that year. I still love the AWE Striker & the Snow Cat, and want to eventually get the 25th/ME/whatever versions. The Silver Mirage is cool too, but it didn't get as much play as the Snow Cat and Awe Striker. I also remember buying Zartan & his swamp skier with my own money, as well as the Water Moccasin & Copperhead. These are all still favorites. Last edited by docdrako; 02-07-2012 at 04:44 AM.. |

Great thread! I have so many great Joe memories scattered throughout my childhood, it's hard to narrow it down:
- My grandparents taking me to Pay-N-Save (eventually became Rite-Aid) in 1983 and buying me Rock N Roll and Flash. - Getting the Water Moccasin in 1985 from my parents the morning they left for the hospital for my mom to give birth to my youngest brother. - Receiving the Hiss tank for my birthday in 1983 and using the driver as cobra commander until I got the real thing - On our way to my grandparents house for a pre-Christmas get-together in 1984, we stopped by a drug store, where my parents let my kid brother and I pick out one Joe each. I chose Firefly, and my brother picked Storm Shadow. The funny thing was, when we got to my grandparents house, they had bought us each a little wind up three-wheel ATV that was the perfect size for our Joes. We spent the afternoon crashing Firefly and Stormshadow into each other on those little wind-up three-wheelers of death. - Christmas 1986, my brother and I both got Night Ravens. We loved those things. I think nearly every waking hour of that Christmas break (you could still call it that back then) was spent playing with those awesome jets. My brother was convinced that the Strato-Vipers piloted the Raven from the scout craft attached to the top. Even stranger, we both thought the Strato-Vipers were girls. Go figure. |

My mom brought me home Outback with no weapons or acc. It is my favorite toy that I still own. I carried it around with me everywhere for years.

My dad was a cross country truck driver, so he was gone for long stretches of time and when he was home, it was never for very long.
I came home from school one day, I was in 4th grade, and there he was sitting on the couch. Behind him, tucked in the corner, I could see the top of the box from the original GI Joe HQ. He died in a car accident 4 years later, and I wish I still had that HQ. Out of all the vintage toys, this one means the most to me and I can't wait until I'm able to get a new one My first GI Joe was Wet Suit version 4. I still actively played with him until about 1999, when I lost him after tucking him into my jacket pocket and running up the bank of a canal. I didn't realize he was lost until later that night when I checked my pocket to play with him again. I knew he must have fallen out when I ran up out of the canal, but when I went to check, there was no sign of him. He was also the base of my first kitbash, in which I turned him into Reptile from Mortal Kombat. I was about 12 in 1999. The loss of Wet Suit feels negligible to me now, since I own more GI Joes than I know what to do with. And I don't get particularly attached to them because I buy them strictly for kitbashing. Also, I've never seen a single episode of the original cartoon. I've seen a little bit of Renegades, and the entirety of RoC. My oldest, most cherished, most played with, and most carefully preserved toy in general is this guy: 2 days ago, I began giving him some much needed repairs, as well as a full-fledged overhaul. Back in 1984, G.I. Joe was almost at it's peak among me and my friends. I'd guess it really topped out in 85 or 86. But back then we all wanted a Storm Shadow figure, and it was impossible to find (hmm, this sounds strangely familiar for some reason...). One day during the summer, my mom surprised me by bringing one home that she had bought from Silverman's. I was surprised she got it from there, given that they cost $3.99 while everywhere else they went for $2.79. But she knew how much I really wanted it. The only problem was, she hadn't noticed that somebody had removed his backpack and weapons from the package, and half of the draw for this figure was his weapons (again, deja vu). She wanted to return it, but I was happy to just have the figure. I ended up with a few of them because they saw a lot of action. But thats the first story that jumped to mind. There was also when I got the battle helmet Cobra Commander at Best Products, and when I swiped a Beach Head from an old man at Toys R Us, but I don't have time for those right now.
