I consider anyone a scalper who intentionally buys stuff to sell, whether they collect it or not. That is, without the intent to keep it any length of time. Out here, my Cali friends call it "toy flipping", which I guess is the same idea, except they don't fix it up, they just, well, scalp it?
Same as with ball game tickets, the guys are called "scalpers" for a reason. They buy tickets in numbers that they could never use, and hope to sell them for a raised price at the ball games, and then go home, they could give a damn about the game. Specifically, comic shop guys bug me. They come in and rake anything "profitable" into a red basket at my local Target, and work at a comic shop, so they can go by at whatever time most of us are at real jobs... Granted, yeah, they can make money off it and there's a market for it. And I've been the dumbass to buy from them on occasion, when there's no other outlet to get the figures. I paid WAY too much for a foil 25th Snake Eyes v2 and Flint v1, but at the time, there was nowhere to find it for less than $20 each. I use them as a last resort, but I hate how they screw the inflation up. I have a few extra MOSC figures than I need for a full set, and plan on using them one day to trade for other similarly-hard-to-find figures, but I don't really intend to sell them to turn any sort of profit... I'm in the hole like crazy on Joes, I don't think at this point I'd make ANY sort of profit unless I sold them all off, individually. Last edited by Mandingo Rex; 09-24-2008 at 07:27 PM.. |

But see, that's kinda what I did. I intentionally got an extra Flint, Bludd, Flash, whatever from off the pegs with the sole intention of either trading it later on the line for something or for selling it for a larger profit once it was out of production.

That, I think, is the bottom line.

If you've got something that's worth something you'd be a fool not to get every thing you could for it. Unless you're helping out a buddy out of the kindness of your heart. Just do what's right by you.
Edited for saying "Something" too many times. |

::shun:: Just kidding. What headman said above, and mswi says below. They're yours, do what you want, let the market decide. I will say though that this has been the most civil conversation on scalping I've ever seen in my entire life!

dude sell them for what you figure there worth, they're yours. to me scalpers buy up products just out or about to be released and charge 2-3x the retail. selling hard to get items like you have should come at a premium. let the market decide

If I thought for a second I'd be able to make a living buying let's say couches from a couch store and sell them on ebay I'd do it in a heart beat.

You picked up an extra of some HTF figures in hopes they would be tradeable down the line for something you would want but may not be able to find. However, these are commanding a high cash price which could help you stick in the hobby?
That is not scalping. Scalping is going to every store in a 25+ mile radius, buying all the hot wheels, sportspicks, star wars, batman, marvel legends and gi joes to sell on ebay and the local toy show in hopes to make enough money to keep mom from throwing your worthless ass out. There are lots of people who buy extras for trade bait or even to resell to make some extra funds to buy more of the same in the hobby. Lots of people here do it too. I have a nice collection right now, but if someone were to offer me 1000s of dollars for it, I would sell it. Does that make me a scalper? or investment? |

Scalpers visit toy forums and ONLY view the sightings section to see what people want and what they found, and buy toys solely to sell them.
Scalpers do not collect toys... they buy merchandise to sell. Scalpers have a booth at Frank and Son's (Southern California), selling toys that were recently released. |
