Mutt was supposed to be a Cobra dog handler at first and
Law and Order might have actually been originally conceived as something a bit different (you'll have to wait for the Declassified podcast for that bit of info, however). So consider that sometimes it isn't simply to sell more characters, although that's obviously a big part of it. Sometimes things got put together and it was too late to change etc or something was decided against later in the game etc. But think of how many MORE versions of Hawk we'd have if they didn't move on to 1,000 Dukes. Recondo is a Jungle TROOPER where Outback is a "survivalist." Thin line? Maybe. But there is a difference. YOJOE.COM | Night Adder As for Recondo and Outback, I just just going by the Wiki, I don't own either figure and am only vaguely familiar with the characters. I was mistaken, it's only Jungle training for both, Recondo is the Jungle Trooper. I think I should clarify, I don't think having multiple people doing the same thing is at all unusual or unrealistic or even a bad thing, but everyone has their personal canon and two of the same specialty may interfere with that. I was curious how that was dealt with, let alone preferences. |

I never really thought about it like the way the Op put it. But I know in the comics they put most of the O13 behind a desk when new guys came in. When I was growing up and played with Joes, though, I just put guys with the same specialty in teams. I remeber really digging RnR and Roadblock and putting them together at the front of the line with their big machine guns.

I used Recondo/Outback as an example only... I have Recondo form 30th and Outback from ARAH (I thought he was a serious kick-ass in that line.. one of the coolest Joes, to be sure..).
Toy play is a personal thing and even at 49 I keep a few Joes constantly by my laptop in the Den. The best part of the whole deal is mixing them up with other toys or other parts of the same line they might not normally be in with. I frakkin love getting a bunch of military style Joes going toe to toe with my Revoltech Alien, which happens to be pretty damn close to in-scale for a change. I don't put too much attention into bios and the such.... I just like or dislike a figure. It's like with the upcoming movie... I can see myself for the first time ever actually digging the Dwayne Johnson Roadblock... but I'm gonna have to be convinced on the Adrienne Pawlicki Lady Jaye... but if the Toys look cool sure, I'm in... Fortunately, Hasbro don't have too many bad looking figures int he Joe line... and that's for true, guvn'r... |

It sometimes bothers me too, GI Joe is supposed to be a small special missions force.
They really wouldn't need Wild Bill, they should all be trained pilots. They should all be specialists in every environment, from desert to Arctic. Really, SnowJob & Outback should be the same dude. |

IIRC, what LH wanted was to basically keep the team small, about 20-30 members. So, rather than all the new figs being new characters, they would've been re-purposed older characters, as the OP said. What some people have talked about for their 'verses is that Joes would be on the team for 3 years or so, and then rotate out. Waves 4, 5, & 6 would essentially replace the first 3 waves, and so on. Not sure about the OP's comparison of Tomax & Xamot to Slice and Dice, though. Some other characters who would've been replaced/repurposed are:

I always looked at Pathfinder as Recondo's replacement.
Aireborn- Freefall Short Fuze- Downtown Outback- Ambush Torpedo- Tracker Bazooka- Salvo That's all I can think of now. I was born in 84 so the early 90s were the beginning of my collecting days. These aren't perfect but they're what I used in my Joe verse.

i have 7 teams of joes, each team has its own medic, coms, gunner, driver, and leader, plus a traker or a sniper. so if they did not have different joes that did the same thing, then i would not have a complete team. matter of fact i need more guys to fill spots. cool thing is i dont need 3 gi joe hawks(if hawk aint wearing a bomber jacket then its not hawk so... poc hawk is not hawk he is a commications specialist named "fire wall" so needlessly to say spot filled
