I'm lucky. My dad is bemused but supportive, my wife is very supportive, although the novelty has worn off for her after 15 years and she can't quite keep up on it, so she doesn't surprise me with toys anymore, but she is fine with me spending $100 a month on them.
And my seven-year-old daughter is always handing me interesting rocks or other items she finds and saying, "Here, Daddy, you can photograph this with your G.I. Joes." |

Well, it's great to have someone share the interest. My sons love the Joes. So besides you guys here on the Tank, my boys are the only ones I have that shares the interest. My wife did actually cave in this Christmas and got me alot of 25th stuff that I have been missing from my collection. So I'll give her that. And yeah, I get the same reaction from my mom too. Eventhough I keep them neatly packed away in my closet my mom still wants me to get rid of them. My mother in law even tries to persaude me to auction them off on eBay!!! The nerve of her!!!

My wife and kids love my collection. My wife and I each have an "allowance" that is for whatever we want. So neither of us complains about what the other spends it on. I make sure she is taken care of so she never has room to complain. Every once in a while I buy her something with my money too. A little sacrifice shows a lot of love and gets you major brownie points.
2 out of my 3 kids collect Joes too so they love to look at my collection. Every once in a while I'll do a trade with them or just give them something straight up and they love the interaction. They love to go on toy hunts or help my wife find a figure if I am not there. Obviously I have more money to spend than they do but I make sure they are taken care of on birthdays, Christmas, and occasional toy here and there throughout the year. My parents were not quite as understanding at first but after they saw I wasn't overboard about it and that I spend about 20@ of what my dad spends on his hot rods, they relaxed quite about it and now even enjoy looking at the collection from time to time and reminiscing about the 80's and which toys I got on which Christmases. Plus I built my own display case and my dad loves woodwork so he thought that was really cool. I just make sure that I pay the bills, food is on the table, everyone has what they need, my wife is happy, and then I get mine. That kind of selfless approach always wins. Even if it means I go a month without getting anything. I had a few months like that once and then my wife surprised me with approving a shopping spree at Kokomo Toys "because you deserve it." What can I say, luckiest guy in the world. Oh, and my wife let me put up the display case in our bedroom. And it was all her idea. |

This is a great thread. My wife does the same thing, "tolerate" it. I use my two sons as an excuse to occasionally buy, but she finally got it through her thick skull that I am collecting for myself and not for them. I also trade with my six year old son. Its sad but true. As long as I keep the bulk of the unopened stuff out of eyesight and keep the display to a minimum in my office its all good.
Where my wife does get excited is why I get something awesome on clearance or at Ross and show her the price tag with the original and discount price. She can't pass on a deal. Now she texts me from stores and gives me the shelf lineup. Last month she texted me that she hid two Sting Raiders in Ross behind a wall of Tron crap and gave me directions on how to find and buy them (she couldn't because my son was with her and one was for Xmas). That's love. |

I live with my GF and it's not an issue. I have my own dedicated room for all my music equipment and toys. My friends always wanna check the room out for any new addition I may have aquired since the last time they came over and it's always fun to see their reaction. If the GF knew how much I've spent over the past several years, she'd probably have a heart attack though.
