I want to share a childhood story with you guys . My wife thought it would be a great story to share with my friends on HissTank, so i was only happy to share it...
Back when i was young and growing up, we didn't have a lot of money. My mother was a single parent of 2 and worked all the time. We were what you called latch key kids. Anyway, my mother worked hard and wasn't around most of the time, but she provided for us and made sure we had what we needed. But when it came to toys, that was always last on the list. So i had to use my imagination when i wanted the things i couldn't get. If you remember the JC Penny and Sears catalogs, they would have the pictures of joe and star wars stuff? I would cut out the vehicles and the figures. I would also cut out the little figures on the back of the joe cards that i had and those would be my army. I would wage huge battles with my cut out pieces of cardboard and paper from catalogs on my mothers coffee table. I did the same with Star Wars too. I had to improvise and to be honest, it was one of the best times i had when i was younger. I got to have my GI Joe army but at a fraction of what it would have cost my mother to buy them for me. I know it may sound strange to some of you, but to me i was using my imagination and knew i would never get to play with most of the actual figures, so it was either this or nothing. Now, i have my collection of real figures, and it is growing with every new wave. But i will always remember playing with the cardboard cutouts on the coffee table when i was younger...

that was truely a nostalgic story viper, and it takes me back to when imagination was the rule and not the exception,i think being adults we sometimes loose that side with all our responsabilities, but in the end you're story shows us two things, A.what sacrifice is about and B.how truely unique we all are...thanks for you're story.

That's a great story about how many of us coped with not being able to have every single toy our heart desired! My situation wasn't quite as difficult as yours in that way, but I only got the "larger" Joe vehicles at Christmas and had to earn pretty much every other figure or vehicle I got throughout the year.
Working odd jobs and saving up my allowance to get the figures I wanted taught me the value of money and hard work, and made my Joes more valuable to me than if I had been given them every time I wanted something on a whim. Now that I'm the parent, I have to fight the urge to spoil my own kids, so that they won't miss that lesson. Just like we did, our kids need some practice using their imagination and a lesson in the value of money and hard work. |

Heal Viper +5 for that one. That was quite heart warming actually. The sad thing is kids can't use theit imaginations like this anymore.

Dude! Colorforms were awesome! I totally had a nostalgia moment when I read your post. Those were the other times when my parents gave me stuff when it wasn't Christmas (my birthday is on Christmas so I got stuff all at once for both - forgot to mention that in my post above).
Anyway, I was sick in the hospital three times as a young kid with pneumonia and my parents bought me those to help pass the time while I was cooped up in the hospital bed all day. I had the GI Joe one, Flash Gordon, The Dukes of Hazzard and Snoopy (as I recall). I spent a lot of hours with those. Thanks for the past blast!!! |

Heh, I had Pac Man Colorforms AND GI Joe ones too!
My parents don't think super highly of my toy collections, even though I'm in my 30's, have a house, girlfriend etc. My mom has even gone on to say that she wonders if I buy them because I felt neglected as a child, which is total BS. I think one of the reasons I am such a completist especially with the 25th Joes is because of the imagination I had as a kid. I didn't have an army of anything, just a few random Joes, but having the imagination in place is what gave me such good memories as a kid, & is what has driven me as a responsible(somewhat!) adult to go out & fulfill that by getting 5 of all the army builders & every last figure & vehicle. I think if I had everything I "wanted" as a kid I would be less happy as an adult, & I definitely wouldn't appreciate the fact that I can go out and collect the things I want now. Good Story! |
