omg dude, i did the very same thing, i cut out the little square pictures from the back and play with them{each cut out eventually became a spitball}. thats probably why i love the card art so much now. the detail of the filecards and the cardart is what makes gi joe so great to me,the acual figure is gravy or the icing on the cake. wow dude, thanks for sharing that story.

Awesome story...
I'm with you there. I used shoe boxes for Joe bases, and a wadded up brown blanket for 'Cobra Mountain'. Then there was the trench battles that were waged in the fields next to our mobile home. Who knows, there may still be a few Joes buried under ground... fallen heroes. I never really went without, especially later on in the mid-late 80's, but in the early years of Joe, I used whatever I could get my hands on. Thanks for the story Viper! |

i did this as well, i also use to use random objects like the wide tube cardboared container from the oatmeal and the jagged metal edge from the foil box, this would be the bobwire to my constructions. also i did wonders with building blocks and my mothers tupperware. i would glue the blocks together so it was pretty much a one shot deal with those constructions. my a.. still hurts for messing up my mothers tupperware. ah...memories

I know... As a designer my imagination has stuck with me to some extent, but you just never have it like you did back then. Know what I mean?

Yes i do...I am going to encourage my son to use his imagination. I will be right down there with him on the floor making bases out of freshly folded laundry and outside waging battles in the snow. It is going to be fun reliving my childhood through him...

Heh, I had Pac Man Colorforms AND GI Joe ones too!
My parents don't think super highly of my toy collections, even though I'm in my 30's, have a house, girlfriend etc. My mom has even gone on to say that she wonders if I buy them because I felt neglected as a child, which is total BS. I think one of the reasons I am such a completist especially with the 25th Joes is because of the imagination I had as a kid. I didn't have an army of anything, just a few random Joes, but having the imagination in place is what gave me such good memories as a kid, & is what has driven me as a responsible(somewhat!) adult to go out & fulfill that by getting 5 of all the army builders & every last figure & vehicle. I think if I had everything I "wanted" as a kid I would be less happy as an adult, & I definitely wouldn't appreciate the fact that I can go out and collect the things I want now. Good Story! I'm apologize for getting a bit off the topic VIPER 48. I just had to say what was my heart at the moment. |
