I grew up around the army, so all that hokey sci-fi stuff was never cutting it for me. Granted, some of the horseshit future-tech used back then is becoming a reality these days makes them slightly more tolerable. |

i can stomach cobra-la nowadays, (my 6 year old son love cobra-la) but it pushed out of joes back then.
I like the otherwise wacky cobra terrorist organization though... you cant lose that.

Funny, I was just thinking about this thread the other day, and here it shows up again. I looked at my response from earlier, and I still feel the same way pretty much. I do think that if GI joe stayed the way it was in '82, it would've gotten a little boring. But then in '83, they mixed it up by adding a SEAL, and an airborne ranger, and a snow trooper. Then in '84, they added a flamethrower and dog handler. As far as cobra, I love the cobra stuff, as long as it stays more military. I think that's part of what drew me to Firefly. I liked the balaclava, and the grey camo. I love the Shock troopers. But I HATE Cobra La.
I did just recently get my first ever zombie vipers, and I'm working on a zombie scene, but to me, that's somewhat military, as I think of it in the same vein as World War Z, which was heavily militaristic. You get too realist like they tried to do with America's Elite and Cobra loses it's charm. I don't need Cobra that's too much like the real world bad guys only with a whackier dress code. Cobra needs to be more pretend terrorist than something you find on the news at 6:30. On the other hand too whacky like Cobra La doesn't work either. I like a little crazy but snake people wanting to take over the world with genetically altering spores is too much like the 80's statement "cocaine is one hell of a drug". So something like I'm going to strap on a CLAW and steal a laser core from GI Joe works just fine. Hit Washington with a dirty bomb or going into battle yelling Cobra La La La, yea doesn't cut it either. |

Military isn't very important to me at all now. When I was younger it wasn't important either. The figure was cool or it wasn't. It is what it always was good vs evil. I'll take the genetically manipulated people, the ninjas, the neon, the star brigade, the metal masks, implausible, plausible whatever. But if it ever became too real I;d likely move on. There's enough of the real world out there I don't need it in my hobby.

I just like the more militaristic aspects of Joe. I didn't like in the comics where Storm Shadow took 6 bullets to the chest but then came back from the dead. I didn't like the cartoon episode where cobra conjured up spirits from the past to fight the Joes. The blob episode featuring airtight was a little over the too for me. I enjoyed the revenge of cobra, but that was pushing it a little. Metal masks and jet packs have a realistic basis to them. I do appreciate the entertainment value of GI Joe. I understand that Joe can't be like Black hawk Down or alone Survivor. So some sci-fi and unrealistic elements are/were necessary. But cobra la just was way over the top for me. When joe started pulling away from the more militaristic themes in the late 80's that's when I started to lose interest. Oh, and too many ninjas! I liked the ninja stuff as a kid, but now it gets on my nerves. That's a while different genre. And while I understand ur armed forces are trained in hand-to-hand combat and silent weapons, having people be straight up ninjas didn't seem military to me at all.

I prefer the releastic military stuff. So, I am not that fan of these extreme sci-fi or non military figures and vehicles.
besides, IMO the name of the brand doesnt allow that much space for non military stuff... BUT I have to admit that Monte's exceptional work with all these incredible pics and scenarios made me more sympathetic towards an adventure team -sci fi style figs. So, thanks to Monte's "bad" influence, I would buy a few adventure team style figs and vehicles. lol lets say my purchases would be 80% military and 20% adventure team. For now my adventure team needs are covered by schleich, bruder and chap mei! They do a pretty good job and I SERIOUSLY doubt that hasbro could make a better work than any of these companies. |
