Back when I was but a wee nipper, my Mum & Dad always used to put one present on my bed when I was asleep, so there was something there when I woke up. It was always the best pressie, simply by virtue of it appearing out of nowhere as opposed to being under the tree.
One that really sticks out is a 12" Action Man Scorpion Tank. Action Man was my main thing back then, so getting that baby sent me through the roof. Downstairs I also got a few outfits and a German Motorbike & Sidecar, but waking up to that big box and ripping off that thin, cheap wrapping paper (but still better than the shiny modern stuff) and finding that tank was something special. Oh dear, memories of parents. This is my first Christmas without either of them here and typing this has made me misty eyed...

I remember getting Cobra Commander v.4 and being SOOOO excited... within minutes I'd pried the front of his mask off hoping for some big reveal...
eh... was still pretty excited to get him.

I remember waking up at 1 or 2 in the morning and walking out to where we has our tree set up. Sitting right in the middle of our living room was the Cobra Terror Drome, out of the box and fully put together. Along with it, I received Hawk, Dr. Mindbender, Low Light and the H.A.V.O.C. I still have that Terror Drome in good condition, and its something I still treasure.

The year I found out that the huge present behind the tree was not a rowing machine for my dad, but was a Gi Joe Aircraft carrier.

I rarely was given any vehicles as a kid. My brother and I played fairly rough with our Star wars and GIJoe toys when we were younger. We often raced generic pickup trucks, vans, jeeps, etc off of ramps loaded with GIJoes, into one another. Our parents were correct in assuming most GIJoe vehicles wouldn't survive the collison. They said the figures were much cheaper and more resilient.
Usually, we would get anywhere from 2 -4 Joes in our gigantic stockings ( I swear they would actually fit a 10-12 year old up to thier mid-thigh). My best GIJOe Christmas memory was the year I got '86 Hawk (one of my very favourite figures from the classic lineup), Chuckles, Armoured CC, and Crystal Ball. My brother got Iceberg, Crazylegs, Mainframe and Lowlight. I can recall other classics appearing in my stocking over the years: Snow Serpent (another fav), Tele-Viper, Tiger Force Duke, Falcon, Downtown, Hydro Viper, etc. The best Joe toy I ever got was the Cobra Night Raven though, and I didn't get it for Christmas. End of unwrapping xmas 1983... Got some pretty cool stuff but was just a little bummed that I missed one particular thing.
There's a card I notice on the tree that says "the wise men have a gift"... There's another card attached to a string leading through the living room, out the garage, around the house and out to the trunk of the car... which was just barely shut... I opened it and attached to the string was my beloved skystriker. |
