Everyone on this site has an opinion about GIJOE. Everyone.
The movies, the cartoon, the toys, the story. Everything. And just about every other month a new movie comes out, where a military team fights terrorists, or giant robots, or aliens, and someone says: "This is the closest we will ever get to a JOE movie!!" Then we all shoot them down. All of us. But honestly, What sets everthing apart? Why can't the Hive from TF be Gijoe, or Dutch and his gang from Predator, or even the Expendables? What makes GIJOE, GIJOE to you? |

Good question.
Personally, I don't like the "that movie is the closest to G.I. Joe". It's kind of annoying. So what does make G.I. Joe? RoC, Sigma Six are G.I. Joe, but they're not my G.I. Joe. It's not just Joe vs. Cobra that makes the property. I think it boils down to "elite military unit vs. high tech super terrorists".

Yeah, I suppose...I'm no Cobra buff or anything, but when I think of Joe I think Cobra. They are what made the cpmics interesting, and ROC bearable-to me- They always just steal the show.
But I think back to the ARAH cartoon...and that wasn't it at all. And being a '90s kid I grew up when they had all of the different series coming and going. Screaming eagles, extreme, Dic, Sigma 6, Sunbow, all of it. And sure I've seen movies, where I have liked them because it was Joe esque, but in no way, its "Joe". I can't really place what Joe is..nostalgia? |

Toys make GI JOE, awesome missile and gun carrying toys. ROC had good toys, but not memorable toys.
I think were getting better in that department. Allot POC had great toy features. We need the HAVOC, MAMBA and of course the BUGG needs to be studied and brought back.

A group of colorful (in personality if not in uniform), high-tech elite military operatives vs. an even more colorful group of super high-tech terrorists determined to rule the world.
(At least, any G.I. Joe from '82 onward...prior to that, it was definitely different) |

When it comes to story, yes..but hardly when it comes to anything else, In the comics yes. ROC yes, But the cartoons and the toys, which is where I spent most my time, No. So its really hard to say it is Cobra that makes it for me.

To me, it is all of the unique characters. They change a lot through the various comics, toons, etc. But they are all still there.
I think this is why RoC didn't bother me. Cobra Commander was so different when you compare the Marvel version, to the Sunbow version, to the various versions from comics in the 2000's... I didn't mind another take on him. And it wasn't the first Duke that was younger or different than the Sunbow icon. I remember one comic (reloaded, i think?) Where Duke was a Cobra. So i really just want the characters to be there. If i don't like the current take on them (Renegades Zartan comes to mind) i am just happy that GI Joe still exists, and in a year, or two, or ten, there will be another version, and i'll have another chance to explore this world that has become so important to me. That's a really long way of saying the characters are what makes it GI Joe to me...

Nicely said JMACQ1, That is true. I always looked at them as my neighbors fathers when I was a kid. They all have borrowed 80s personalites. kinda.

Gijoe is a solid foundation of characters and a certain quality in product. The 3 3/4 figures we love today wouldnt have the same following if the originals from 82-84 were gawdy, poorly made pieces of doo (The original Star Wars figures sucked). Its a well groomed brand, they used the best writers, cartoonists and toy production company back in the day and it set the standard. Everything else is a copy or a rip off. Everything has been done before, and its been done by Gijoe.
They have since expanded to multiple lines in many different scales, it all appeals to someone. The newer and different Joe lines are even the focus for many collectors now. Even so, for most of us its the original toy line, comic or toon that brought us here, no matter what or where here is now. |
