Did any of you have any use for this poor sap in your childhood adventures? I would venture to say that Raptor & Crystal Ball are probably the least played with & talked about figures in GI Joe fandom. And I bet they definitely skip the annual Cobra Christmas Party.
Rumor has it that Stephen King's son wrote the file card and came up with the character. I mean, we know Dr. Mindbender hatched some crazy schemes, but Crystal Ball almost legitimizes some form of sorcery or "other-worldly" powers in the joe-verse. Did you guys usea any of that in your childhood play? Crystal Ball might have made a decent Dr. Strange villain or fit in better in the Marvel universe. Did he ever appear in the Marvel comic? I cannot remember, but I don't believe so. I mainly ask because I am toying with an idea for a GI Joe/Evil Dead crossover dio-story, now that we have the Zombie Viper, but I've never really thought about "magic" and how it applies to the sci-fi military GI Joe world.

When I saw the thread title, I thought you had a misspelling and meant Meth. Crystal Meth.
Seriously, though, I never liked CB. I wasn't into that kind of stuff. I wanted a more realistic army. But if someone can find a spot for him in their Joeverse, then more power to them. I won't knock it. Speaking of Dr. Mindbender and his crazy schemes, they could've featured a CB-type character in Renegades, in the Brothers of Light episode where Mindbender was searching for people with paranormal-type powers.

The funny thing is that, as a child, I had the figure. But never found much use for him. I never could find a way to employ the use of magic with my GI Joes. I kept my Joe toys strictly military as a child. And because of that, I quit collecting in 1990 after the brand got too sci/ fi, too ninja and too ridiculous.

All of my friends had Raptor and Crystal Ball. Not only did we play with them, but they were often featured in our little backyard adventures.

I loved the hell of Raptor! He was such a neat figure stylistically. Definitely unlike all the other figures on the shelf at the time. I'm a huge fan of weirdos and odd balls. I've never put any restrictions on my Cobra army. I've always seen them as an organization that will accept anyone no matter how eccentric they were if they had a skill to offer and a desire for power.

I liked Raptor because of his role in the comics. Never had Crystal Ball. I'd buy a ME version, though.

I liked him cause you could stick him in any vehicle as he had no backpack.
If a figure had a really cool backpack, I wouldn't want to put him in a vehicle. It's weird, I know. |

I was always the “odd-man-out” when I was a kid. I actually loved Crystal Ball and Raptor. Yes in my Joeverse Crystal Ball was an evil Dr. Strange-esk sorcerer. Who used his occult ways to turn the Joe’s into mindless slaves.
Raptor in my Joeverse was very different from his filecard however. To me he was a Native American with mystical shaman powers. If I remember correctly I even used a Crystal Ball to make a Dr. Strange custom and I used Raptor to make a Blue Falcon custom. Personally I think using Crystal Ball in an Evil Dead crossover dio is a perfect fit. But hey I always was the weird one.

I had both Crystal Ball and Raptor and ol' CB never really got much use. Raptor on the other hand was AWESOME!! He figured in to a lot of battles and was often the force that turned the tide for Cobra.
