I thought you guys might get a kick out of this one.
For those of you who have never been to Appalachia and have only seen shows on Discovery channel about American's "backward" mountain folk, that's only a fraction of the story of what goes on around here. Growing up in Southeast Ky, moving away in my teens, then moving back as an adult really made me appreciate how much I hated living here as a kid. It truly is a bass-akward place. A third world country in middle of the U.S., I'm not trying to make fun of it but the poverty here is unbelievable and people seem content as long as they get their monthly checks. Those same people use that money in the thriving drug trade, moonshiners have been replaced with meth labs. Seriously, for such a remote area the amount of drugs produced and used is astounding. Almost nightly you here about another lab being busted on the news. And a huge % of the pot used in the US is grown right around here. What has amazed me the most since I moved back 2+ years ago is a thing called the "good ol boy network". If your a guy and live here you're entire life and don't leave (very important), you can literally get away with murder. Since I've been back I've seen drug dealing openly going on in the parking lot of the court house, criminals elected to public office, and recently a judge award everything to an adulterous man who walked out on his wife and 3 kids, ( he even gave this jerk the house she bought with the money she inherited when her parents died). Recently the good ol' boy network has gone into overdrive protecting the Sherriff of a county in Tenn., about 12 miles away. He raped a 15 year old girl, they had his DNA on her clothes, and he got away with only having to do public service and sensitivity training. Oh and he kept his job. The girls parents rightfully are trying to overturn this injustice, but nothing will come of it. Last night I was watching the local news and saw were my little towns' mayor and son were federally indicted for buying votes in the last election with cash and prescription drugs ( as if the drug problems here weren't bad enough). He got caught and is going to stand trial but we here in town know nothing will come of it. Why? The good ol' boy network. You see this same guy was mayor in the 80's and was federally indicted on OVER 100 counts of stealing city funds for personal use. He was convicted, he was supposed to go to jail for a long time, HE WAS PARDONED BY THE GOVERNOR IN THE 90'S. Why doesn't the national news get ahold of a story like this? It's a freakin goldmine of corruption up here to report on. Personally I think the amount of sin and corruption around here makes far better news than what K-Fed or Puff-Diddles did today. I know this is a silly rant, but when I moved back up here it really was a dream of mine to set down roots and rediscover my heritage. I'm selling my house and leaving this place and will NEVER move back. The true shame of it all is this area around the Cumberland Gap is so beautiful, an amazing natural treasure. But it has become almost imposible to live an honest, clean life. And for those of you wondering why the ferderal government lets this kind corruption with politics and drug production go on openly, your guess is as good as mine. it's hard to believe, sounds more like a third world country than america. looks like boss hog is up to his usual hijinks. sounds like you need the duke boys to straighten things up. |

I can't tell you how many people around here have a general lee and honk that stupid horn everywhere they go.
Yeah, we may need them, the problem is everyone around here think they are the duke boys. Sab |

Wearing bells helps the bears to hear you coming in case they are distracted with something else. Bears tend to hear or smell you and go the other way unless it's a food dump or a kill site. Most attacks occur because bears happen on people and are taken by surprise, their instincts going into action and they think you are stalking them or a mother goes in defense for her cubs. There is nothing more dangerous in the world than a grizz sow defending her cubs except maybe an African bull elephant in rage. It is good to know the difference between black and grizz footprints, spore and/or scat. If a black bear attacks you, fight back. If a grizz attacks you, play dead. That black boar I saw on my back land I would fight tooth and nail if I had to and it attacked me. Because they can be fended off. When a 700lb grizz attacks you, there's nothing you can do but try to convince it you are dead and no longer a threat to it. Sab |
