In the UK the Action Force/GI Joe figures (which came after the purely Action Force Palitoy figures - see BFTB: TOYS) had different filecards making them an international team. There was still a heavy American presence, but a goodly number of Brits and other European and International troops.
In addition Marvel UK released the Action Force comic for 50 issues, which consisted of original stories plus re-prints of the Hama GI Joe series (with some gaps which were filled to link in with the UK storyline - e.g. GI Joe issue 21, the Silent Interlude, was re-printed in the Action Force run and had a prelude set in the UK in which Scarlett was kidnapped in London and an epilogue that tied back into a Marvel UK storyline) I never saw or even heard of the cartoon as a child, and thankfully have still not watched it ;) Marvel UK Action Force comics: Pre-GI Joe: http://bloodforthebaron.com/comics/baf/index.html GI Joe/Action Force: http://bloodforthebaron.com/comics/maf/index.html |

My 1st encounter with G.I.Joe was both the comic at my local newsagency and the Hasbro 3.75 figures @ my local K-Mart.
Bought some of both and incorporated the figures into my SW and Robotech figure collection and always enjoyed reading the comics especially whenever SE featured. |

in 1985 this book came out:
YOJOE.COM | G.I.Joe Fact and Yearbook I had NO idea that the joes were in other countries until I got that book and like most anyone else, no idea how to get any if I had wanted some, it wasn't like you could just get online and look for them. Unless someone you knew lived over in those countries I suppose then they could snail mail you pictures of what they looked like.

When I was a kid I didn't really think about it, Joes were the good guys and Cobra was the bad guys and they fought. As I got older I went by their file cards and the comic, so I guess I see them as an American team of elite soldiers that expanded into an international terrorist unit.

The first time i en-counted Gijoe was when early joe vs cobra stuff came out in the UK i saw the Beachead vs Mindbender pack and Mindbender reminded me of Doctor X (an Action Man villain for those who dont know)due to his appearance and i picked it up i then became more interested in it and i bought as much of the two packs as i could. So i think one of the reasons i became interested in Gi Joe was because of Action Man and he seems to get forgotten alot and talking about international Joes Action Man teamed up with them in that battle pack.I like to think that Gi Joe started out as a small 13 man unit then expanded when Cobra became a bigger threat which meant Gijoe became bigger and they have brought people from other countries into Gijoe such as Big Ben and they would be spread all over the world on missions and the main base of operations the Flagg or the PIT for example would be in the US

I have travelled to many countries and ive seen joe figs in some of the strangest places. i think hasbro might actually benefit from adding somemore international figs to the line like maybe a Rep of the Phillipines marine or a Digger from Queensland, Or a Republic of Georgia special forces. I have seen joes in all these places its amazing to see kids buying them up its about more than being a real american hero and kids just playing good guys vs bad guys and everywhere has both of those,

GIJoe is well-known in the Philippines as of course, American heroes...US used to have air bases here in the 80's to early 90's.
Some pics in the late early 90's where Joes are sold here in the Philippines... This took place in SM North Edsa, some sort of a sale or toy launch, I dunno... We will never experience the same glory when the Terror Dome and Defiant were just warming in toy ailes. If only I can travel back in time. A toy shop in Greenhills, San Juan called Nova Fontana. Can you name the single carded Joes and Cops figures? Every kid in the 80's to early 90's here in the Philippines have, or if not, has to have a GIJoe figure, it's like a fashion trend in terms of toys. The 1984 Storm Shadow v1 was very popular among kids that it's a shame or you're a "loser" if you don't have Storm Shadow figure. I used to have one, broke it, regretted it, and now I have the HoH and 25th Anniv v1 Storm Shadow to compensate for it.

It is cool to see all these people from other countries on here. As said before, there is Big Ben, Oktober Guard, and there is also some asians in the ninja ranks. I'm sure there is more figures from other countries in the American GI Joe line-up, if I actually had time to research it, but I don't.

Since I'm one of those who swears by the comic, G.I.Joe was always decidedly American for me. I used to go totally overboard with their patriotism when I was younger. One epic plot involved Cobra stealing an American flag, which didn't go well with out heroes. Well, as far as McGuffin's go, I still say that's a pretty good one. Anyone noticed almost all of Cobra's high command are European or Australian, with the exception of CC himself. Just what sort of message were they trying to convey? Well, I'm not complaining or anything. It's nice that us Europeans had someone we could relate to, as well. |
