As a handful of you know, I am a big ol' Sigma 6 nerd. I'd left G.I. Joe behind for years by the time Sigma 6 arrived, and I might not be collecting Joes today if it wasn't for Sigma 6.
But Sigma 6 toys are big ol' honkin' things, and when I moved out of the States a couple years ago, I had to put my Sigmas in storage. Luckily, the Rise of Cobra and then Pursuit of Cobra toys were there to take their place, and now the 30th waves and soon the sequel toys. But after that, who knows? I realize 2019 is an arbitrary choice, but my Sigmas have been in storage for two years, and I (arbitrarily) decided not to dig them out until ten years have passed. That'll be 2019; eight years from now. Eight years ago, according to yojoe.com, t'was the age of Spy Troops. Back then, figures like this were on the shelves: Imagine if someone back then had interrupted you during your toy shopping to show you this: (And then imagine that this time traveling jerk said, "Not that you'll be able to buy her," heh-heh.) And eight years before that: A lot can change in this property in eight years. When I finally open that box of Sigmas in 2019, what will G.I. Joe look like? Will it still be a presence on the nation's toy shelves? Will the sculpts have continued to improve at their present rate? (If so, we'll have small-scale Hot Toys figures, basically). Will they take a step backward? |

Unless the figures can stay at least as good as POC then I think it will be in a lull. Any 8-12 year old kid who got into Joes with Rise of Cobra will be in their early 20's and that's not the best age for collecting. 2029 will be better because they will be in their thirties with more of an expendable income more like most of us now. However with the way things are going, kids are getting less and less interested in these type of toys. That's what I think anyways.

I loved the Rise of Cobra toys, but yeah, I don't think any kids will be looking back on them with anything approaching the passion with which we all look back on ARAH. It's just a different world, where children and their perspective on action figures is concerned.

Yeah, I'm fairly confident that G.I. Joe as we know it will not exist by 2019, but not so much through any fault of the brand so much as there isn't really a "next generation" of potential adult collectors to pick up and carry the torch as more of our generation gets out of collecting, etc....
Barring the possibility of Retaliation (and potential sequels) being a huge hit with adults and kids in both the theaters and the toy aisles, reinvigorating the brand with a bunch of new kids getting into it. |

Do you think I can have at least 1 modern era astronaut figure by 2019???
Yeah, probably not. Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow come first. Poor Payload & Countdown, awesome characters that get no love. |

We also had a cartoon, kids really don't get much of that any more either.

Probably a bad time to point out I vastly prefer the look of Spy Troops Zarana to the new 25th Sculpt version.
I think an awful lot depends on how well Retaliation does, both as a movie and as a toyline. If it does even moderately well, then we'll get a third movie, and that means a third string of movie toys, and that'll take us at least to 2013-2014. Maybe then we can get a decent cartoon to carry us along for another 2-3 years, and maybe then there'll be a call for a movie reboot. Or maybe Retaliation will flop, the Joe line will die, and we'll all have more disposable income in 2019. |
