AFA Grades on new figures is a pointless exercise in spending money.
I don't agree with, but can see some justification in AFA grading toys from the 80's toys that for whatever reason dodged the frenzied opening of an excited 8 year old. Of course the value seems to decrease every time rumors of grading reissues and bootlegs get out. But with every 8 year old then, being a MOC collector now, AFA grading loses credibility. There are plenty of people who can carefully store toys and avoid the tempation of opening them. The only thing you get from grading a new toy is a fancy plastic box. The only reason the prices are so high is because people are willing to pay that much for the guarantee that what they're getting is of a certain quality. If you don't buy a lot of vintage MOC figures, you don't really understand the reason why people like AFA. There are some collectors who refuse to use them and still manage to have connections with reputable sellers of vintage MOC's. If I had that opportunity, I'd be doing the same thing. Like I said earlier, if there is someone on ebay that is a reputable seller who is selling a vintage MOC in excellent condition with many detailed pictures to prove it, it will usually go for the same price as the same figure with an AFA grade of 85 or 90. Maybe I'm looking at it from a standpoint of insuring my collection is of a certain quality. I'm not thinking of putting anything up on ebay. If I were to sell them to someone I know, it would be the value of a normal MOC figure plus the money it cost to get the item graded.

I kick myself in the ass on a semi-daily basis for not thinking of the idea that people could send me their toys, let me go over them with a microscope and be super anal about any possible defect it might have and pay me to put a number on it and send back to them. I would so not be working another job if I had thought of it, lol.
I can see the point of doing that with things from the mid 80s going back, but I have to laugh at the thought of people getting POTF2 Star Wars or pretty much anything modern that is mass produced (and mass hoarded) by some who don't quite remember why it is that toys prior to about the mid 90s are worth what they are. |

AFA is a waste of $$ imo. I collect 80's carded joes and I won't pay 2x-3x sometimes 5x price for something when I can ask question from the seller on Ebay and get it in decent condition and then get my own case for $10. I have a 9 back (I think if I remember right) Snake Eyes I got for $200 with the bubble barely lifting. If it was 100% sealed and AFA graded prolly a 80-85 it would be what $2000 at least. Forget that.
I collect MIB transformers too and people will pay $700 for a g1 car from 1984 sealed AFA graded. I'll buy mine for $100 and get a nice case for $20, done. I can get 6-7 of them for what they paid for 1.

While I have been more into MIB G1 right now I have quite a collection of MOC 80's Gi Joes and vintage Star Wars.
AFA is really for people that are worried about pristine quality. A spider vein or ding to the bubble to me doesn't take away from the display of a figure on card in a acrylic case whether it is AFA graded or how I buy mine and put it in it's own case. It's just not worth it to me and not very cost effective. Eventually I want to get an 84 Storm Shadow and Firefly and have been searching for them for a while but I'm not going to pay 700-800 for one that is AFA'd when I can prolly find ones for 200-300 or even less that might have an inperfection ie: bubble slightly lifting which I can reseal and then put in a $10 case and have it look exactly the same for the most part. I'll prolly go on the search for them soon but I have a heard time spending over $200 for a figure as that is paypals limit. I have yet to really get a figure I have not been happy with though and I have over 30 or so 80's joes moc most from 83-86.

How do you rate something that is sealed in the box, and perhaps you cannot see what is inside. For instance is some or any pieces are missing, can they determine that. Another example is if the figure is loose can they tell. Or AFA is just grading the box only not the toys. If seems to me that we are paying top $$$$ for the "CARTON BOX" not the toys. In my opion, AFA is the people who only cares about what's holding the toys but not the toys itself.
I PAY AND CARE FOR WHAT INSIDE THE BOX BUT NOT THE BOX ITSELF. I DON'T PLAY WITH THE BOX, I PLAY WITH THE TOYS. Last edited by tuan_tran73; 08-18-2008 at 01:05 PM.. |
