The real sad part was G.I. Joe was doing just fine with the return of the 25th Anniversary. Then, Transformers blew up in theaters that Hasbro/Paramount rushed to get G.I. Joe into theaters. The Big Three (TRU, Target & Walfart) jammed their stores with the movie toyline's first two Waves. Because Collectors got what they wanted before the Movie got released, hurt toy sales because nobody else was buying the toys after that. Hasbro really thought the Movie would bring in more sales for the brand but in reality no Movie toyline does well. Thanks to the dismal sales of ROC, retailers won't touch the brand with a ten foot pole (and they're the only ones to blame). Hasbro redeemed themselves with POC and the 30th lines. But, thanks to ROC, 2011 has been the worst year for Joe (accessibilty).

Wow talk about revisionist history, you left out that Hasbro overproduced ROC, screwed up distrobution (In more than just GI Joe) and shorted orders after ROC.

I,for one,am quite relieved that I no longer have to set foot inside a walmart, let alone actually giving them my hard earned money.

Well that really wanst hasbro's fault this is more of a retail issue then anything. Retail boxes choose to drag thier feet through the waves and end up either not getting them or not carrying them all together

I live in a small town in NC. When it comes to collecting Joes there’s a Kmart and a Wal-Mart. The nearest Target is 1.5hr away, the nearest Toys R us in 2 hrs. away. Neither the Kmart nor Wal-Mart has carried Joes since 2009 with the ROC line. So imagine my surprise when I walked into a local CVS and found a 30th anniversary IG. At first I wasn’t going to buy it because I thought $11.99 was a bit much for a single figure. But then I remembered that some figures are going for that and more online. There are 2 other CVS stores in the area the second had nothing; the third had a Steel Brigade trooper and a Stalker. I got the 3 figures. This was about a week ago and they have already restocked.
So to my question, does anybody else find this just a little bit sad that Kmart and Wal-Mart are not carrying Joes, but CVS is?

Its a combination of things.
Walmart has been cutting support for Joe since Valor vs Venom. Walmart didn't want to order Joe mostly to support The Corps as a line and other retailers followed suit. Its why Joe had to go DTC, and come back and reinvent itself as Sigma 6 which at LEAST got the brand back in stores but that failed to perform as well. Regrouping again we got 25th and started to pick up steam, which lead into ROC....that SHOULD have been something to help pick up sales and boost the line, personally I think the film while OK at best strayed too far from what fans were looking for, and maybe too far from what makes Joe such a good property. This caused the toys to flop. Now I think some of that was from the studio input...clearly Paramount pumped money into this project so Hasbro wasn't gonna say, no to things like Tatem head Duke. There was a lot riding on that film and its toy line....Joe fell hard. POC became a redheaded step child I mean it seemed like every wave was a struggle for one chain or another to have it. Seriously I still never saw the Shock Troopers in Walmart or TRU...just Target...and similar stories with other waves...I know I never saw the Croc Master wave in TRU or Target....how mess up is that? I'd like to say 30th is doing better...it does seem to be a LITTLE better to find, and this Renegades wave is hitting hard...I'm seeing those in a lot of places, but again its still no where near what it should be. I HOPE this new film hits hard and does great, also I'd bet this toy line is better...hopefully they learned something from ROC...and god help us if we get another waste of plastic like the Pit playset...or the seriously overpriced Raven. |

Wow owner of a lonely bat that is a thoughtful answer. This happened to Star Wars action figures after episode 1. There was just too much of a bad after taste. I think were headed into a very good direction with the Joes.
Shipping off of the internet is still waaaay cheaper than driving a car. Every saturday morning me and my hunting buddy go out and do about 15 stores total. Cost about 30 bucks all the way round and back in gas. And thats if I purchase anything. So my first figure really costs me $30+8.99-11.99? I do not drive a car to work so I have no commute to factor in stopping at toy aisles. But there is not a "around the corner" Walmart or Toysrus. I have to drive out of the city to get to them. And thats a total IF I get them. There is no promise after wasting a half day and 30 bucks of gas that I will find a Toxo Viper. I could easily order 2 for 38 bucks on ebay or BBTS or Kokomo Toys. Brings me back to the topic, its really depressing that INDEPENDENT TOY STORES DO NOT EXIST. I dont give a shit about Walmart, there a terrible company and I love the fact that I dont have to give them money. I am old enough to remember the days of multiple toys store chains and independent stores. Video games came along and everything changed. Lowens toys of Bethedsda MD had to be one of the coolest places I have ever been into as a kid. They had a sweet lego display and a kinda crummy action figure aisle. I still have a printed plastic gift bag from them. Who misses Lionel Kiddie City for that matter? They had a huge GI JOE aisle it was crazy cool. I got a stuffed animal TMNT doll there once when I was 7 or 8. I think while GI JOEs get cooler and cooler, obtaining them gets shittier and shittier. Thats a fact you can take to the bank. I never ever bought cases before this year. Its f-ing terrible to try to find GI JOE.
