Kind of interesting how much Sigma Six looked like Small Soldiers characters though.... But if toy sales do well, even if the film tanks, we'll at least continue getting GI Joe at retail, probably in a manner similar to what we've gotten since the end of RoC (lots of core characters, a few remakes and new guys sprinkled in) Quote:
That said, if the decision were mine, I would not create a movie-specific Retaliation line. I would include Retaliation product in the basic line, essentially the way the Renegades action figures are being released as part of the 30th Anniversary collection.
If the film and its related merchandise is a home run out of the park, then I might greenlight a separate line or let the movie merchandise take over the basic line. The problem with that situation is...if the toyline does well, why is it? Is it because of the classic remakes, or is it because of the movie tie in? And if the movie is the source of success, to accommodate that and rework the line, then it would take MONTHS for such a reworking..by which point most of the "buzz" for the line might have worn off. It is easier to simply launch a movie-centric line (and retailers are MUCH more apt to support such a thing to begin with), and increase production for later waves than wait and revamp the entire product line 6 months after the film has come out.

IIRC, Hasbro once said the "Small Soldiers" line of toys did exceptionally well at retail, so much so they were exploring continuing the concept without the movie support. I think the only reason they didn't go forward was issues with the studio and such. The film, obviously, didn't do anything major and is now largely forgotten.

I would almost guarantee that Renegades was a BIG selling point to get retailers buying into 30th, and retailers will always support a toy line that has external media support. i dunno. what i hope happens is the movie is great and the toys are good, too, and not as divisive as the roc toys were. i hope the toys blend in with the 30th stuff and the brand carries on strong after the movie, giving us a shit ton of cool product to hunt for for a long time.

Whether the movie is good or not, I don't know, but I know it will be a success as far as money, regardless if you did not like the first one or not. The haters of the first will be curious to see if this one is better and fans of the first will definitely see this one. GI Joe fans in general will want to see it because it's GI Joe. As far as the figures, I think they will do fine since the movie figures will be the only new figures released for months to come once the movie drops. There will be some crap, some all right figures, and then some gems. If they do more POC/30th stylized figures, the figures will do even better. I hope they continue with the POC/30th style card art and size. That is my breakdown.

I really don't even want to venture a guess here, I think there's a lot of valid points here. I will say this: Hasbro needs to do more marketing of the product. I remember how GI Joe was cemented into my childhood by the awesome commercials. The MOBAT one was the start. If kids today saw the cool stuff in the Joe line like we did in the 80's, I think they'd want the toys. What kid wouldn't want the GI Joe line, after seeing kids dropping bombs on a VAMP, then being driven off by a Skystriker, while Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow fight on the edge of a cliff in the backyard?
Shit, those MOBAT commercials worked on me. Time to try again, and the Hub is the perfect place to start...

It's all specualtion, I say you need tot take a "wait and see" approach and time will tell how it will pan out.
They should re-run all the vintage toy commericals on the hub during all of the other crap they show :0 but I guess that would be misconstrued as "false advertisement" since the toys are no longer available cept for thousands on ebay...
