Hey Tankers I wanted to know about selling Joe
Customizers seem to sell hasbro toys and Gi Joe characters all the time via ebay...I want to know the details on the laws here. I ask cause I'm thinking about making a Joe motion comic and putting it on DVD.I'm sure a few people out there would like to have that...can I sell that even though its not exactly mine? any feedback would be appreciated... |

That's IP theft, no way around it. You're taking someone else's original, copyrighted ideas and characters and making money off them. With customs it's a more grey area because of their one-nature but what you propose is a giant no-no.

In a lot of ways customs are far worse because you're actually using their product where as a picture is 100% yours. thats like saying action figures have no credit or worth right? |

Put it this way -- try doing what you wanna do with Star Wars names and see what happens.

hmmm
are you talking about drawing a comic with characters of a registered/trademark brand, coloring it, distributing it...for a fee? i dunno is this the same as if i said "hey zoe...can you draw and color a picture of Snake Eyes decapitating Duke" and you say "sure...for X amount" if you draw duke and snake eyes in an instantaneously recognizable fashion, and label the drawing with words specifically naming the characters you've drawn...is this illegal also? wow...i have no idea i just confused myself. I see commission work at events all the time. Commission work that is in no way sanctioned by the owners of the source material, though i suppose i would say that is also illegal. anyway...now i kinda want to see my example realized in full color |

I just dont dig motion comics.
I like the inky - mildewy smell of the real McCoy. Hell, I wont even buy the reprints of the Marvel run because they are missing the adds, the postbox/ editorials - thats all an essential part of the experience to me.

No, but like kneroh said, it is a little more of a gray area with customs. They could crack down on customs if they wanted. But with anything that's mass produced, there's a matter of copyright infringement and trademarks and all that stuff.
Put it this way -- try doing what you wanna do with Star Wars names and see what happens. so like if I sold a custom snake eyes figure he did well so I bought a ton of figures and made more of that same one I might get in trouble. It's like a money thing is what you're saying. I guess after saying that it makes even more sense to me cause you put money down to buy hasbros toys from a store then you are just turning around and selling your work...something like I'm doing is just making something from scratch and turning around and making money off of hasbros ideas without them ever getting a thing.......yeah... I really have no idea about the commissioned artwork..that actually does sound kinda sticky cause hasbro is getting nothing from it and you just made profit off their ideas...that is where I think I'm starting to see the line in the sand. well thanks guys, I want to make this a reality but I guess I can only have it be a junky video on youtube rather than a nice DVD with menus and lots of flare.. :( I have bunches of other ideas I could sell but I have no market for the material..I know lots of tankers and tankers that actually like my art and my take on Joe so it just seemed logical to do the thing we all love....oh well. |

I'm small time though...no adds for me lol I like to be a little cinematic as well like for fighting and stuff just go into an animated sequence...I don't have enough people to do voice acting so thats why it pretty much has to stay a "comic" i.e reading text on screen rather than hearing the dialog. |
