There was one friend I played with and after the battle only each of our favorite character would survive. Mine was always sonic Falcon and my friends was Hit N Run.

When I played alone, I usually didn't follow any established story line, most of the time the figures weren't even the same characters. Since it changed every time, anyone could buy it.

Always dies: Cobra troopers who are guarding the base/ part of the assault force

Always wounded (Okay, it's off-topic but still related): Beachhead and Snake Eyes as they're often the point men in infiltration and are often left holding the line when the rest of the force gets delayed. Also Duke as he's often captured and tortured such that he has to be carried out.

Always survives: Scarlett, as she's almost always in the command post coordinating the action. Until I get Mainframe/Data Frame (as Hasbro's calling him now), Scarlett will have to hold control duties being in Intelligence.

Everyone else could get wounded or die.

And yes, I still play with my Joes, as it's only now that I could afford having full squads of them. I never got to do this in this scale as a kid with only a handful of figs and all of them Joes, no Cobras.

Oppositely, Duke always died in my 'verse.

Everyone else was always alive or wounded in some fashion.

My mom was a nurse so I always had cool white nursing tape to have my guys bandaged up and Halloween blood and red clay for wounds.

I even buried Duke in the woods lining my backyard with one of the JOE package bubbles over the hole like a tomb you could see down into.

He was there FOREVER, before I decided to bring him back on a special mission with my best guys and the old school APC in a race against COBRA to get to his tomb.

He needed to be brought back to life because he held special info that only he knew.

What that special info was really meant nothing, it was just my kiddo "Macguffin," to move the story along and bring him back into the fray.

Finally, after the race became a battle yards away from the tomb of Duke. The JOES that never died held off COBRA while LOW-LIGHT and TUNNEL-RAT snuck past the conflict and exhumed Duke's body to bring back to HQ on a hijacked Cobra Ferret.

This storyline went on forever with my friends, my figures, their figures and a mish-mash of other figures like Star Wars, Bionic Six, Dungeons and Dragons, Masters of the Universe, Ninja Turtles (Mostly the bad guys) etc, etc....

It was always one scale for the JOES and the Bad guys/COBRA had a compilation of scales from different lines.

I would cross pollinate figure lines if I/we could come up with a good enough character, reason, or whatever.

Specifically, the Millennium Falcon was with the JOES, and the Star Wars bounty hunters were always hanging around with COBRA.

Now, as an adult. I have my HALO 3, MASTER CHIEF (Green), set up with a few select JOES just chilling as their secret weapon project.

He looks cool in the background with the JOES because he's tall enough to be menacing but not really ludicrous looking.

I wanna get more Spartan figures. Maybe a Blue one (E.O.D armor variant) for COBRA as a counter attack measure so they have one too. Or even a RED one and make him a CRIMSON GUARD Spartan.

I keep seeing the Halo 3 figures more and more, and I'm tempted. because I liked the first series Green MASTER CHIEF and I made some cool custom weapons for him from dollar store cheapie figures b/c he doesn't have enough stuff, and JOE weapons are too small.

But alas, budget is budget and I chicken out of buying the Blue Spartan so I have more money for GI JOES.

I explain this to my GF when she's over my place, because she sees how the set-ups change, and she's like:

"Are you sure you're almost 30?"

and I'm like:

"At least I'm not buying, or thinking of ways to cheat on you, or score crack."

Leave my imagination alone.
