Happy to hear you guys (and gals) enjoyed my post of this piece of unproduced Joe history!
I'm sure it is one-of-a-kind! It is very hard to part with and will most likely keep it for the long-run in my collection... I am still curious what the true value of this piece is and need to find out so I can insure it at the very least! =) |

Yeah a few things look off, like it was a casted piece made from the real deal.
All the voids in the piece the whole deal with one of the eyes looking like a worm is coming out of it. Hopefully you didn't shell out a boatload of funds for what could end up being Not As legit as you believe. |

The piece is 100% the real deal... I even verified it with yojoe.com's editor James Dolan and AFA has offered to grade it for me for a price of course!
It was given to me from the actual designer of the prototype... I even have the box he sent it to me in. These kind of pieces distort (shrinkage occurs) over time and tiny pin holes appear because of the material they used back then (I forget the name of it)... It is 21 years old (1987). I paid "$0.00" for it! |

Good idea about getting it insured. Honestly I would never even consider selling it. Infact I'd probably hire an army of ninjas to protect it lol.

DAH2008...you have a real treasure there! Congratulations! I am very happy to see that this has surfaced. Did you get it directly from the sculptor Bill Merklein?
If you are interested, check out my article on the Rocky Balboa figure over on the great new G.I.Joe website JoeIntel.com: Article: Welcome to Joe Intel Additional Pictures: Welcome to Joe Intel Rocky Mention in Order of Battle Comic: Welcome to Joe Intel It should probably be a 2-Up, which means it's 2 times the proportion of a released 3 3/4" G.I.Joe figure. ALL the 80s & 90s G.I.Joes were sculpted at 2-Up size. And if this came directly from Bill, the medium it's created in is plumber's epoxy. It's worth alot of $$ quite frankly. If you're ever interested in selling it, let me know. Again, congratulations! -Peter Last edited by j_t_d; 07-31-2008 at 11:06 PM.. |

You are correct it is a 2-UP and YES, Bill Merklein did send it to me a few years ago! He's a very cool guy!
We talked about how the figures (and which ones he sculpted) were sculpted and produced and what kind of material they used ect. You are correct about the plumbers epoxy being used for this... just forgot what the medium was called. I don't want to sell this... just curious how rare it is and what the value would be today. I plan on passing this to my future twin boys (of course when they are much older and can appreciate a one-of-a-kind piece of Joe history) due in December. It is after-all the golden item in my joe collection! |

I'd suggest getting in touch with Nomad over at JoeDeClassified.com . He runs with a group of guys who deal in rare protos/artwork/packaging and can probably give you the most accurate idea of it's value. Personally, as a one of a kind piece I would never let it go.
It's funny that you have this, as I worked for a snail mail dealer back before the internet who had the magazine that those pics cames from. Long story short, I left, and searched for those pics for almost 12 years before I found them again....everyone I talked to thought I was full of crap until I rounded up a moldy (literallty) water damaged copy of it.
