i do the train thing. never owned nor worn a conductors hat. if i go to a show, it's usually the old guys with their attrocious lionel crap that have those idiotic hats on. they should be strung up and beaten...

Uh, in the Model Railroading and Railfanning hobby, we refer to the special asbergers cases who wear conductors hats/outfits as "Foamers" or "Vesties".

I'm a pretty serious model railroader, I've been published in various hobby media about two dozen times since 1992, I'm building my third large layout in my current home, I know people across the country with large operating layouts, and none of them, not any of the ones I'd classify as "serious" or "normal" would wear a conductors outfit while they ran they're layouts.

Usually they are guys with well balanced lives with well paying jobs and families who work hard to pay for there hobby and aren't some mouthbreather who smells like armpit who owns a pair of overalls and a striped hat. Fuck, I worked on the ground for the railroad for a year and a half and I wore a t-shirt, jeans and a Carhart jacket. Now I work as a dispatcher and sit back in my chair in the tower and make things move. I do the same on my friends Model RR layout every week during operating sessions. I don't sit there at his layout with my security clearance, ID and my work boots on.

I know Steels is a CO on a railroad, he can tell you plenty about Foamers...

Rod Stewart is a pretty big Model Railroader himself, hell he was even on the cover of Model Railroader about six months ago, and judging from the pictures hes a hell of a urban scenery modeler.

I have it on okay authority that he ended up with an engine I painted and sold in the late 90's. The guy I sold it to sold it off not too long after that and It changed hands a few times and as of earlier this year Rod might have it.
