I always loved the "realism" of the comic, and even as a kid had a hard time watching the cartoon with its lasers, break dancing snake eyes and injury-free combat. I can remember playing with friends who didn't read the comic and wanted to play with Joes in the cartoonish style would drive me nut's as a kid. It was hard to explain all the backstory linked to the comics, and many arguments over things like who Scarlett's boyfriend was ensued.
SO. Lets get some votes in, who looks to the Comic for Joe Facts and who thinks the Cartoon is more representative? My vote is firmly that the Comic is the gold standard for Joe History.

I take the marvel run as the real joe mythology but I loved the cartoons as well. The toons were just snacks between the meals (the comics). The way I played with my joes was brutal and was influenced by road warrior.

I was born in 84' so I didn't exactly grow up with the cartoon, I saw Mass Device, and the Revenge of Cobra several times as I rented the VHSes from the local store maybe a few others, but my childhood with GI Joe was spent collecting the current comics of the time, and buying old issues and figures at flee markets and second hand stores.
I think aside from Mass Device, Revenge of Cobra, Arise Serpentor Arise, the Movie and the Dic Anti-drug episodes I only saw one or two other episodes before a couple years ago. The comics defined what I knew about GI Joe as a child, so I have to say that's what defines it for me. |

depends on my mood. If I want something more "real" I like the comics, if I just want to have a little fun the cartoons are great but why does one have to be over the other?

if that is the case then there is no right answer. There may be one for you but only you and if you think you are the lone owner of GI Joe then you are flat out wrong. Why is it that so many people think that their own personal view of something is the way it should be and anything else is just garbage?

Both were commercials designed to make you buy toys. Imagination is the real answer
