They're two totally different approaches to the source material (the comic was more cerebral and layered, while the cartoon delivers 20 minutes of escapist fun) and as such, I get the same amount of enjoyment from each.
I wouldn't like to go without either, but if I wanted to demonstrate to someone why I like Joe so much, I'd show them the comic.

comic is the best but it's nice watching the stories rather than reading.

The comic came out first, so that's what is #1 to me. But the cartoon is still as enjoyable as reading the comic's-old & new.

For me, the Cartoon mini-series came first. I remember sitting down all week after school to watch the original Mass Device series and it was my first real introduction to the characters beyond what I read in their file cards. That, and the Revenge of Cobra turned my set of cool looking army men into real characters.
When I was a bit older, I found the comics. I used to pick each issue up from the drug store every month until GI Joe became the first, and only comic I ever subscribed to. I can't tell you how cool it was to look forward to getting a comic in your mail box every month. Do they even do that anymore? The Cartoon opened the door to GI Joe for me, but the Comics made it a rich and detailed world inside.

The cartoon is just utter tripe, i tried a while back (when they were running it on Cartoon Network after midnight) to sit through a couple eps and i just couldn't make it even half-way. I know it holds a lot of nostalgia for some folks, but it was just so darn "cartoony"
Interest in the 25th line recently got me to re-read the comic series from the beginning to about the point it starts to go downhill, and aside from some dodgey, overly expository dialog (which was kind of the nature of comic writing at the time) and the old school coloring it held up surprisingly well (there was a lot more mature content i totally didn't get when i was a kid...). i was really impressed with a lot (not all) of the art. And i just love how much real world military jargon/tactics/etc Larry tried to ground it with.

Depends on the character. I'll always hear Duke's voice when looking at the toy. (not the crazy kind of hearing voice either) Same for Flint, Scarlett, lady J,RoadBlock, Shipwreck especially, and CC, Baroness, and Destro are all brought to life by the cartoon (as corny as it was). But Snake Eyes, StormShadow, Zartan, they all had such great character in the comics that that's how I imagine them. If I have to pick just one (as per the rules of the thread) I picked comic... but after typing this up i think it's the cartoon that gives the best character to most of the toys.

Can't vote, no option for both
![]() I liked a lot of the aspects of the comc and a lot of it is in my own Joeverse (IE: Scarlett and Snakes) but the cartoon is what I grew up on and where I found out more about characters that the comic hardly touched on (IE: Shipwreck) So both are great in my book |

Comics,
Hands down for me. I missed a lot of the issues as a kid but now re reading the marvel run as an adult it is amazing how many of the themes are still shaping the world around us. Some of the conflicts in the made up countries of the comics are pretty close to real events. It's amazing something 25 years old (especially a comic) is still applicable to the world we live in. Larry Hama was a freaking genius and he had some crappy concepts to work with as well. If you think about it he seamlessly incorporated a man dressed as a bird, pet crocodiles, a ridiculous emporerer in a snake skin suit, and several other terrible gimmiky costumes (darklon) and made them relevant to that world. Of course I realy enjoy how he handled the ridiculous Battleforce 2000 by blowing them to smitherenes.
