"People that would pay that much are crazy."
We as collectors have all heard this in one way or another. Be it a $10 Marvel legend or a $100 Sideshow or god forbid, a $2000 statue, I'm sure at some point we've all ran across this opinion. I am tired of hearing it. Yes, toys are becoming expensive..but so is everything else. As a non-smoker, non-drinker, workaholic father of 2 kids, I think I'm entitled to a vice of my choosing that does not hurt nor affect anyone around me and at the same time, will pan out to be a financial asset (based on what I buy) going forward. I had this conversation with someone at a Joe board re the Sideshow Cobra Commander. I bought two as I open one for display and keep the other packed away. Am I dork? Probably. Is it more of a value than other hobby related and/or vices I could be spending money on? I think so. It is always funny when a buddy or visitor to my home looks at me like I'm a loon about how much time & money I spend on this hobby while in the same breath, whine about how much they dropped at the strip bar (you know who you are) and how cigarettes have risen in cost so much. At least I have a cool display room to account for my tastes. I don't judge or complain about their preferences..why do the same with mine? Maybe it's just me. I'm just curious if some of you have experienced this and if you have drawn the same parallels. |

I could care less what anyone says about what I spend on MY toys, with MY MONEY. I do find it funny when they try to be a smartass with the comments, but then shut them up quick, when I ask what do they have to show for $100 bucks they wasted on partying vs what I spent on my collection.

It's funny. Things that can kill you like smoking, drinking, and drugs are more socially acceptable than toy collecting. That's part of the reason you need level six clearance to access the part of my home where I keep my collection. :-)

the cigarette part was the greatest....My girlfriend is like how much money are you going to spend on toys? To which I reply, how much money are you going to spend on cigarettes today?
Your right, at least when you are collecting you are investing in something you like, and that will have forever (most of the time) rather than a pack of cigs, booze or at a strip club for a really expensive boner. screw the haters |

I'm looked at as a loon too....or even worse as some kind of loser dork. People who don't understand "toy collecting" just don't get it. For them it's perfectly normal and acceptable to collect sports memoribillia, work on and re-store old cars, golf 24/7, sit infront of a TV and play video games all day, go out and drink and party every night (or anything else you want to use as an example)....I'm like you, I got 2 kids, work hard and love my wife and would do anything for my family. Why is my hobby looked down on as being "silly" or "toys are for kids"?
I try not and let it bother me and it brings me too much happiness to ever let what others think make me stop. I'm me, this is what I'm into, if you don't like it...that's fine. I've accepted being known as the "toy nerd"......but I'm a damn good looking "toy nerd".....so I can live with it. |

THANK YOU FOR THIS THREAD!!! I have been a collector now for around 9 years. The past 3 years have really took my wallet for a ride and I have tons of stuff. But I get that look from people when they see my toys.. and they ask "What Are You Going to do with this crap when you die?" I tell them... well it's not going to kill me so I am not worried about it like your Cig's and Alkie's!! At least I can get rid of the stuff for money before I die!!! That usually shuts em up!!

I crunched some numbers, when I used to smoke, I would spend around $75 a month! $75 wasted on just an experience, not even something I can continue to enjoy years later!
My money is my business as your money is your business. I wouldn't bat an eye over spending $200 for a Flagg. I only slightly batted an eye when I spent $160 on a Millenium Falcon a few nights ago and I certainly didn't give a crap when I spent $660 on a Fortress Maximus 7 years ago! Although, now, I wouldn't spend more than $200 on one if I really wanted it again I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can find that there is something everyone will pay huge amounts of money for. |

Speaking of spending too much money on something. I want this:
Statue of Liberty USA Garden Lady Liberty Statue Huge - eBay (item 320277772747 end time Jul-29-08 08:14:44 PDT) It would make for an awesome dio with the cobra airship overhead and claws and trouble bubbles everywhere while Joes were flying around with jetpacks... Although the statue and base and pedestal would have to be about 16 feet tall to be in correct scale I think. The statue shown is in scale I believe. But the Pedestal and base would make it too big to put inside. I would settle for one that was smaller than scale though. Something like a 6 ft tall statue and a 2 foot tall base.
