"People that would pay that much are crazy."
We as collectors have all heard this in one way or another. Be it a $10 Marvel legend or a $100 Sideshow or god forbid, a $2000 statue, I'm sure at some point we've all ran across this opinion. I am tired of hearing it. Yes, toys are becoming expensive..but so is everything else. As a non-smoker, non-drinker, workaholic father of 2 kids, I think I'm entitled to a vice of my choosing that does not hurt nor affect anyone around me and at the same time, will pan out to be a financial asset (based on what I buy) going forward. I had this conversation with someone at a Joe board re the Sideshow Cobra Commander. I bought two as I open one for display and keep the other packed away. Am I dork? Probably. Is it more of a value than other hobby related and/or vices I could be spending money on? I think so. It is always funny when a buddy or visitor to my home looks at me like I'm a loon about how much time & money I spend on this hobby while in the same breath, whine about how much they dropped at the strip bar (you know who you are) and how cigarettes have risen in cost so much. At least I have a cool display room to account for my tastes. I don't judge or complain about their preferences..why do the same with mine? Maybe it's just me. I'm just curious if some of you have experienced this and if you have drawn the same parallels.

All my friends laugh at me about collecting toys. Most of them spend 8 hours a day at the gym, or spend $100 a night on booz and stripers. I think i have the upper hand on them. |

Wait a minute. You guys collect toys?!! HA ha ha, NERDS!!!
J/k. Some of you guys really are like the Simpsons comic shop guy and you know it. It's ok, embrace who you are. Steriotypes exist because there can be a lot of truth in them. Anyway it's true, everyone thinks that whatever they waste their money on is ok, but heaven forbid you "waste" your money on what makes YOU happy. Besides everyone knows smoking is cool, just look at the cool people hanging out in the trailer park or at the slot machines. I aspire to reach that pinicale of humanity. If all it takes is a financial drain and lung cancer, well hell sign me up. |

Lots of people know I collect toys. I don't look like the type that collects toys, but I do.
When people ask me why, I say "cause I can, and my Psychologist advises it to keep my murderous rage in check". When people say it's stupid, I tell them to piss off. it's what I do, it's what I like. I don't tell others how to enjoy their lives. People collect Salt and Pepper shakers, cows, owls, ceremic dogs. Well good on em. If it's something to take their mind off the bullshit going on in the world, leave em be. Same goes to me. Don't have nothing nice to say to me, piss off. ![]() |

to keep it simple all i have to say is i don't tell you how to live your life don't tell me how to live mine. My family and friends understand i could have worse vices like the aformentioned smoking and drinking (which don't get me wrong if you like it cool). As long as my financial responsibilities are met, then where my money goes is my business ,and as said before if you don't like it, Well, sorry for you.

When I first started collecting toys about 4 years I ago, I was very embarrassed. I didn't want any of my family or friends to know. I also found it very difficult to work up the courage to go through the check out at a retail store. Always worrying that the cashier thought I was too old to be buying toys. As time passed, however, I became more and more comfortable with my hobby. I stopped caring what cashiers thought of me and even told family and friends about my collection. I definitely got my fair share of odd looks and comments. After awhile though, people just accepted it and don't really give me any grief about my hobby. It's just what I do. The collector mentality is not exclusive to toys. People collect coins, hollywood and sports memorabilia, Native American arrow heads, etc etc. The problem with collecting toys, in many people's minds, is that toys are supposedly for children. This makes us seem immature I guess. I don't care any more. I just do what makes me happy and let other people do what makes them happy.
Except I still haven't told any of my friends. |
