Toys are my only vice too. My family is cool with it, but my coworkers think I'm nuts.

People have a hard time understanding other peoples addictions, I will admit that 2 years ago I would have never thought about collecting a line of toys. G.I. Joe was my childhood icon and when I saw the new sculps I knew I had to have them. I have had people come over and see my collection and they don't get it. I don't expect them to. This is for me to enjoy.

I remember about 8 years ago I bought a C-10 unused MIB Fortress Maximus for $700.00 and the guys at work thought I had lost my mind. That's nothing compared to what I spend today. I recently spent $1,500.20 on my AFA 85 Whirl Transformer and recently placed two bids at Premier Collect for two AFA graded Joe's with my max bids for both items totaling about $1,800.00 or so. It is not uncommon for me to spend a thousand dollars or so on a single toy, but I really try to keep it to myself and not tell anyone.

Money - ciggy = waste for a short nitocine fix and more money is spent for more ciggy after the packs go out....
Money - drugs = waste for a short time of being high and more money is spent on drugs... Money - drinks(beers and whiskey) = waste for a short high with a possibly of not getting laid (lol) and the high go out fast that more money is spent on dinks... Money - toys for collectiables = life time of having something to play with, trade, sell for profit, build memories, and many more good things out of it. I spent about $3000.00 on toys starting January 1st, 2008 to today, July 27th, 2008 and I'm proud of what I have as I don't care about money. I just like to collect to keep me sane, to build memories of whet I had when I was a child. I see people spent money on drugs, ciggy, drinks and I laugh at them because its a waste of money on those things when it last a day and toys that we all have last a lifetime. I hope people agree with me on this. |

Yea, we're freaks. But we're better than the person that paid 7 million dollars for the first issued license plate.

Thank you for this thread. I used to go clubbing, drink at bars, and throw money at naked women dancing, but now that I have a wife and a baby I much rather spend my money on toys. I always put my family first and I would never buy toys if my money's tight, but I'll always collect toys because it's who I am and it makes me very happy. I used to drop $300 on Predaking, $250 on Shockwave, $330 on G1 Scorponok, $350 on Overlord, and $450 on Liokaiser but those days are gone. I am now watching my money more closely and even a $10 toy has me thinking a bit. My wife does get on my case for buying toys when I have so many at home, and I am trying to sell the toys I don't want anymore to make room and to help pay for the new toys. My only regret is not have shelves and display cases to put those toys. All my toys are boxed away except for the really small ones and that ain't right. I will continue to buy toys for as long as I live and since I don't drink, smoke, or do any harmful things I am a lot better off than people who do those things.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who gets this reaction. Though mine comes from my family, especially my older sister who is constantly harping and nagging on me wasting MY money on useless toys or the comics I buy every month.
I'm pretty much at home all the time due to illnesses so after paying bills, helping my Mom with her bills and getting essentials like food, medicine and stuff I feel that what I do with my money is my business like has been stated here but she feels that if I stop buying 'useless crap'(her words) I could buy her a car since her son wrecked hers. |

I agree with most of what has been said here, but I also admit that collecting toys ain't the most reasonable way to spend one's money.

When I first started collecting toys about 4 years I ago, I was very embarrassed. I didn't want any of my family or friends to know. I also found it very difficult to work up the courage to go through the check out at a retail store. Always worrying that the cashier thought I was too old to be buying toys. As time passed, however, I became more and more comfortable with my hobby. I stopped caring what cashiers thought of me and even told family and friends about my collection. I definitely got my fair share of odd looks and comments. After awhile though, people just accepted it and don't really give me any grief about my hobby. It's just what I do. The collector mentality is not exclusive to toys. People collect coins, hollywood and sports memorabilia, Native American arrow heads, etc etc. The problem with collecting toys, in many people's minds, is that toys are supposedly for children. This makes us seem immature I guess. I don't care any more. I just do what makes me happy and let other people do what makes them happy.
