Being a Navy veteran I was just wondering what kind of code/nick-names other veterans and military personal have had or heard.
I received the nick name of Psycho as early as boot camp. When the company commander came face-to-face with me for first time and said, “Jesus Christ check out this Norman Manson, Charlie Bates Mother-“F”er.” I was the only recruit the CC’s couldn’t get to crack a smile, something they tried to do as often as possible. I would receive this name again once I reported to my first ship, USS Saratoga. After being there for about 2 weeks Petty Officer Worthy dubbed be Psycho. He felt I was too quiet and was sure I was going to snap one day. One day just before man-up a friend of mine called me over, I was already in my gear and was about to go on the flight deck. He wrote something on the forehead piece of my cranial, which I was wearing, he said “ya gotta have yer name on your cranial” It wasn’t until an hour later after launch that I saw he wrote Cy-ko on my cranial. On a different note, pilots have their call-signs painted on the side of their aircraft. I once saw an F16 with the name Capt. “Crash” Hartly. I remember thinking do we really want a guy named “crash” as a pilot. |

i was called "Mop" in the USAF. I passed out because of complete exhaustion and heat stroke in basic. my TI was so amused, she dragged me across the floor and joked that she was literally mopping the floor with me.
This unit calls my husband "PornStar" because he was showing off when he kissed me before leaving for a field exercise. He bent me backwards and took his time. Lol!

Isn't "Jody" used as a nickname? Usually making fun of an FNG or something?

IIRC, General James Mattis (formerly of the 1st Marine Division) went by the code name "Chaos" during OIF I (I think he went by "Mad Dog" before then). 1st Marine Recon Bn Commander Lt. Col. Stephen Ferrando went by "Godfather" (it's a somewhat cruel call-sign, as it refers to his raspy voice--something he got after throat surgery for a tumor or something, or maybe it was a stroke or something -- which left him with a voice like Marlon Brando's Don Corleone). 1st Recon Bn "A" Company Commander Cpt. Bryan Patterson was assigned the call-sign "Assassin One" I think ("Assassin" referred to Alpha Company, "One" indicated he was the company commander), but it's been a while since I read Evan Wright's docu-book, so I could be misremembering.
Note that these are proper call-signs/codenames (i.e., you use them on the radio), and not just nicknames that they got from their fellow military personnel. |

A friend of mine is called Leg. He doesn't like that. Oh and my brother's name is "Lap dance" because it kinda sounds like his last name.

Yup. They weren't just made up for the book, though. It was their actual radio call-signs throughout OIF I.
