I wouldn't be worried about what people think- I'd be worried about what they DO. Old brittle plastic + drunk people who don't understand "handle with care". Put 'em away.

The jig's up... it is over for you. LOL.
Maybe you can do a little customizing and set everything up on the pool table like a Gettysburg battle or something and try and convince everyone you are a civil war buff.

Just put them away so you can alow YOUR guest access to a game of pool. Afterwards when they leave you can have fun dusting them off and redisplaying them, besides its a great way to remember what you have. You just might be surprised what you forgot you have. Next time you might want to have joes on display in the living room on a bookshelf like I do, you might find what a great coversation piece they make when guest come over.

I agree with alot that is said.
I would not be ashamed of them, and if they were in a display cabinet or on a shelf, I would leave them. On a pool table however, it's way too easy for somebody to mess with them, and it would also be nice to have people playing pool. Somebody might get drunk and decide to clear stuff off and play pool anyways so I would pack them up.

I would put them away only so they don't get messed with.. I think you may catch some flak and joking around about them, but who cares.. I would be more worried about people not respecting them and taking some of the figure and doing odd things with them as a joke. People who don't collect usually don't understand the personal and collectible value of things and usually view them just as toys and rarely respect them. Unless you know every person coming over and they know and respect you.. I would just put them away so nothing gets broken or ends up dodging pool balls or something weird like that. LOL

Plenty of good advice here- I agree that having the pool table open is great for the party. Run to the store, (walmart/target/whatever) grab some storage bins and store the stuff as best you can. If you don't mind people seeing your collection, feel free to leave some of the stuff out on shelves/on top of TVs/whatever. Good luck!
