I'd love to know how my fellow Tankers thought about the 1987 animated GI Joe movie.
I thought it had some great things (super animation, some cool new characters, and some mild animated violence) Things I liked: 1) Cobra Island 2) The danger (Duke gets hit in the arm with a laser and skewered by a lance. Roadblock gets blinded. Cobra Commander loses his human form & his sanity) 3) Some cool, new characters (Tunnel Rat, Law & Order, Chuckles, Jinx) 4) The best opening to a movie, hands down Things I did not like: 1) Cobra-La (never liked the organic nature of it all. Living bridges, beetle lock keys, ships that spat tentacle bombs) 2) Some bad new characters (Big Lob, Falcon [just making him an obnoxious brat ruined what could have been a cool character], The Renegades ) 3) The overuse of some characters (Sgt Slaughter, Falcon, Jinx) I just think that when I watch it now I realize that just like Transformers: The Movie, it's just not very good. It's a shame that we hear Sgt Slaughter every 2 minutes, but classic characters never speak a line or hardly even show up unless it's a background filler. Guys like Flash, Short Fuse, Zap, Ace, Tripwire, Mutt, Rock n Roll, Spirit, Cover Girl, Firefly, Scrap Iron, Storm Shadow, Recondo, Ripcord, and many other who could have been given SOME part in the movie were pushed aside some we could watch Falcon go through training with Slaughter & those Renegades. Maybe it's just me, but I would have rather finally seen a fight between Storm Shadow & Snake Eyes (I know they had no cartoon connection, but they wouldn't need one just to fight.) than Falcon doing pull-ups. Instead the one time Snake Eyes shows up in the movie he's bitch slapped out cold by a Cobra-La guard. I just think that if this was indeed Sunbow's final act in their GI Joe universe it could've been done much better. Thoughts? |

I could not agree more after Cobra-La came in the act that was Sunbow's bullet to the head. Even when they tried to re-hash the series under the DIC licensing. If they were gonna make a final battle movie it should have been Hawk vs Serpentor and Duke vs Cobra Commander and have both heroes get into a duel to the death and end it that way no bugs, no half snake men, no nothing.

Cobra La pretty much turned all of the show's ideas on their head at that point... Like was mentioned above, some characters became merely background images and there was too much emphasis placed on new and untried characters.

It definitely existed in the same universe as the tv show, so that is a good thing. BUT. . .just like with Transformers, they focused too much on the newer, weirder characters like Cobra-La, and that was a disappointment.
When you are nothing but a glorified toy commercial, though, what more can you expect? Out with the old, in with the new. Unfortunately, the new was stupid. |

Isn't that what both the Transformers and GI Joe movie were really for? To advertise the toys and introduce the new must have figures while replacing (or killing off as was the case with TF) all the old ones? The funny thing is that I still think the TF movie was cool and I never liked the Joe film.

yeah at least Transformers had more emotion and it's funny hearing Ultra Magnus saying OH SHIT! during an attack.

It's hilarious.
It used to be up there with Death Wish 3 and Timecop 2 as my favorite "do bong hits and lay on the couch all afternoon" movies.

They use organic weapons and ships made of space whale. Yeah, the Yuuzhan Vong have carapace shell armor and bug beetle thud bugs." My response: "Oh, like Cobra-la." That took the wind right out of their sails.

It's a stinker!
The 'regular' cast barely featured... Cobra was sidelined... Cobra-La was an absurd concept that felt like it was a 'leftover' from a totally different property... The boneheaded sci-fi story itself was about as incompatible as you could get with GI Joe... Some great individual scenes and an apparent glimpse of Clutch (hey, he got back from that parallel universe!) couldn't save this turkey. I find it unwatchable and don't acknowledge it as an official conclusion to season 1 & 2.
