Items can be in the back room without being in location. When the item comes in, it gets scanned, so the computer knows it's arrived. If there is a lot of product that is going out for a reset, it may be simply placed on a pallet and put aside.
Back room locations are marked with letter/number designations. When the employee looks for an item, the LRT, the gun they carry, tells them it's in--for example--B3. The computer knows the item was in B3, because it was told. If a department is about to reset with a large amount of new product with a large number of new DPCIs, the department head might take all that merchandise, stack it on a pallet, and put it in an empty location without telling the computer. They don't need the computer to tell them where it is, because they know. The end result is that the items are simply boxes hidden among more boxes. There are three types of items not scanned into location in the back room: items that are legitimately not there, random items that were accidentally left unscanned, and items that were intentionally left unscanned to keep them from being taken to the floor. You're not going to get the first group of items, because they simply aren't there. You're not going to get the second, because it would take too long to find it (as in it won't be accomplished within a business day). You're not likely to get the third group of items because they've intentionally been hidden from the average employee. thankfully i have a red polo shirt that i wear with khakis, i've been to the back a few times in the past...but now i know what to look for (the mysterious hidden pallet) |
