Here's why it might not have worked: studios didn't take comic book movies seriously until BATMAN and Spider-Man brought home the bacon. Prior to that, studios wouldn't have invested in the genre of a comic book or cartoon adaptation, so the were mediocre (Punisher, Masters of the Universe.) What I mean by that is, in much the same way that Spielberg & Lucas helped legitimize a number of 'ghetto genres' (sci-fi [CEOT3K], horror [Jaws] and the serial-style adventure [Star Wars, Indiana Jones]) via critical and commercial acceptance, it took Batman and Spider-Man (and acknowledging the 'first step' taken by Superman I & II) to do the same for the comic-based film (which GI Joe truly is, since Larry Hama created the bulk of the mythos in comic form. Remember, it was Marvel's top-selling title for a couple of years.) It took one director at the peak of his career influence (Tim Burton) to make Batman as grand and (therefore) successful as it was. Which paved the way for the X-Men (good hit) and Spider-Man (massive hit) which opened the floodgates. Toys got their commerical hit with Transformers. Tellingly, critical acceptance is nowhere near as important as it was when Batman arrived (1989); in the age of the internet, popular opinion outweighs the influence of subject-specific academics (sad but true.) The Lord of the Rings series was the highest achiever of the ghetto genre set, actually winning the Triple Crown of cinema: box-office, critical acclaim and Academy Awards. Video games have yet to break through as a genre. I think perhaps HALO has that potential; Uncharted might have, had David O. Russell remained engaged. CGI is only a visual effects tool for expanding scope and stunt work, and GI Joe (as defined in the 1980's) would not require anything in scope or stunt work beyond, say, Indiana Jones, Star Wars or Predator. There are no superhumans or massive armies. Effects technology is always changing -- more important is the scripting and directing. If the script is good and the directing is good, the rest will work. The director will solve his effects limitations with story and creativity. So I think my answer is: the field wasn't ready and it would have probably resulted in a very low budget, work-for-hire directed movie (because no one who'd grown up with a fondness for the material was old enough to be a director/producer.) One of the greatest x-factors for a movie's success is the level of the creative team's interest in the subject. And everyone but us kids, Larry Hama and Hasbro thought this was a joke back then. And they still do, frankly, because no filmmaker has done anything to alter that preconception. Even though the DNA is there to do something expcetional. |

I'm not sure how well a 9 year old Ray Park would do as Snake Eyes.

With a cast like that, the movie would have been expensive.

Well, it would have been a live action cartoon so it prolly would have sucked. However, it could have been okay. Either way, dolph would have been duke. Count on it. Oh and lots of ninjas!

A G.I. Joe movie in the 80's would most likely have looked like this:

Part of the problem with your "dream cast" is that a portion of them would have been kids themselves in the 80's (Sienna Miller was herself born in '81)...
Not only that but ensemble casts rarely work. Sure they look good on paper, but so does communism. You're not a commie, ARE YOU? |

Some people didn't even read what I said, I was just saying if everyone were the same "younger" age, what would be an awesome cast? I don't care about the cost of what it would take to hire the actors, or if the CGI would have sucked or not, this was just an all-star "what if?" thread
