The beret has become an important mark of unit identity in many military outfits and I've seen plenty of examples of them being worn in the field. In the Norwegian cavalry (armor), we had black berets we were very proud of, and we wore them whenever we could get away with it. According to Cavalry lore, the origin of this was that a soldier is never meant to go bareheaded outside, and guys in tanks had a hard time wearing a standard issue cap inside their tanks, because they had to push their heads right up to the periscopes. So they were allowed to wear their treasured berets instead. (God knows why they weren't earing helmets.)
But the armored infantry that also made up the cav units started wearing the beret in the field as well. I wonder if wearing berets in the field was more common a while ago and also whether it's more in vogue among non-US soldiers. I'm sure I've seen pics of British Royal Marines and/or Paras wearing berets in the Falklands war. I don't know what the precendent is among US soldiers, but having a few Joes with berets makes plenty of sense to me. |

Some Spetsnaz also wear their berets into battle.

The US Army has actually decided to get rid of the black beret (BBC article) as part of the standard uniforms (after spending millions of dollars on it), although the red berets (for airborne units), green berets (for SF), and tan berets (for the 75th Ranger Regiment) will remain authorized for wear. This sets up an interesting conundrum. Will the 75th Ranger Regiment go back to wearing black berets now? The only reason the 75th went tan was because the non-SF/non-airborne Army units switched to the black beret ten years ago. Quote:

USAF Still wears them in Garrison on a daily basis...I just got done wearing one for 20 years. But it caused quite a stir back when the Army just gave away what prior had to be earned. It was confusing to us because we were always the only beret wearers on the AF bases, at least dark in color, but when the entire Army started wearing them it made it seem like there were a shitload of cops running around....Oh well, It's better that they went back to the patrol cap for garrison. I think Hasbro just put the beret on figures to change things up a bit....And I think they look cool....
