One thing that really stood out to me in the linked article... GI Joe had over 43,000 subscribers in May of 1985. Not 43,000 copies sold per month, 43,000 subscription copies per month. I imagine the total monthly sales of the book (subscription + newsstand + direct market) was probably in the 200,000 to 300,000 range, at least. These days, a non-Batman/X-Men/Spidey monthly comic book would be lucky to sell over 20,000 copies a month.

Personally i think its because Duke is the wholesome 1940s-esque flag-waving hero archetype(also see captain america+superman) that all young boys supposedly admire and want to be,basically he's the "poster boy" for GI Joe,which is why we get him constantly re-hashed....

Got to meet Shooter at a comic con recently. Great guy. No charge for autos. He signed long boxes full of comics for some people. Was willing to talk as long as anyone wanted and answer all questions. It’s a crime he’s not doing more work in the industry now. He was the Stan Lee of the ‘80s IMO.

I don't leave Wyoming much, don't do conventions but Shooters blog is extremely interesting.
