Serpentor and Cobra La are the reasons I lost interest in GI Joe in the 80's. The super-powers that they and even Sgt. Slaughter had, turned me off to the cartoon. They should have left the super-powers to Marvel and DC superheros. I see my Cobra and Joes as ordinary, everyday people with exceptional combat abilities.

Mine is a genetic super soldier and tactical mastermind. While not a general, he is present during operation planning. He is used as more of an elite soldier, leading a group of select troops during sensitive ops: the commando Yin of Storm Shadow's ninja Yang to Snake Eye's awesomeness.
No silly cape, custom bashed and finalization in the works.

In my Joe-Verse he is not made by COBRA, but rather years before by a group of wealthy investors who hire scientists to clone the perfect leader. However, one of the scientists was a former Nazi who includes Hitler's DNA in the mix as well as attempting to clone Hitler and the dead Nazi leaders on the side.
When the investors learn of this, the project is terminated. One of the investors, a French aristocrat, takes the baby in as a servant. This aristocrat is the Baroness's father, and she later learns of the boy's lineage after she is COBRA Commander's second-in-command. COBRA takes him in. With training, and with Dr. Mindbender's help to unlock his genetic memories, the boy (called Adam, for Assimilate DNA Alpha Male), quickly proves his genetic legacy and COBRA Commander grooms him for power as his successor. Serpentor at age 15 (in 1986) is given command of the Vipers, a group of specially-trained COBRA soldiers designed to fight the GIJOE team specifically. However, as time goes by, Serpentor becomes more and more unbalanced and unstable due to the ambitious warring personalities inside his head. He eventually hires Firefly to assassinate COBRA Commander (this attempt does not succeed, but CC is comatose for a while and hidden by Storm Shadow). Serpentor rules COBRA and reinvents it as the COBRA Empire, or Imperial COBRA. The Pythons in my Joe-Verse are Serpentor's army. COBRA Commander wakes up and leads his COBRA loyalists against Serpentor in my version of the COBRA civil war. COBRA Commander and Serpentor meet on the battlefield and COBRA Commander kills his "son." I always thought (and still do) that Serpentor as a character has lots of untapped potential. In a way, he's the most intriguing of all GIJOE characters. My personal favorite version of Serpentor is V2. I think he looks best in those colors.

The 25th vehicle pack version rides his chariot on a half shelf I've set up for the animated movie. The other is a kitbash of the single card and the DVD pack version, and he is in the front row of my Sunbow Cobra shelf, right between Best of 80s Cobra Commander and Dr. Mindbender.

Serpentor never fit into my Joe verse. I like IDW incarnation of him though. It's the only version that makes the least bit of sense to me.

As portrayed in the comics, Sepentor was cool. Made to be a super soldier, but with the built in ambition that couldn't stay subservient for long. His short rule and death were an excellent end to the Cobra Island Civil War. In fact the whole Cobra Island story would make an excellent parts 2 & 3 for the GI Joe movies.
