As I am on the side that says Hasbro has kind of lost it with GI Joe, it did get me thinking that while I am not happy with the direction Hasbro has been going, they have delivered some great and made it fun for the last 5 years. Lets take a look at me:
1) I was COMPLETELYout of GI Joe until shopping for a nephew and discovered Sigma 6. I thought - wow what a great reboot. I really liked the 2.5 vehicles, but thought a 4" would have been better. But it brought me back to the stores to see: 2) The 25th. I remember I only bought the 1st Joe 5-Pack for Snake Eyes. And it wasnt until I took the others out of the box did I feel like early-mid 1980s GI Joe all over again. I got caught up in the hype, the disappointment in the Original 13, and while I think it produced more filler than awesome (judging by what I have actually kept) it was fun. And I sure didnt have a problem find Joes around town (unlike now). Without them, I probably wouldnt have been exited for: 3) ROC. I hated it. I hated Ripcord. I hated the Neo Vipers. I hated Destro. I hated Cobra Commander. Rex? Really? Zartan? How did Larry let all that happen? I loved Barnoness. Yeah I bought a lot of the figs and tried to like them but in the end really only kept a couple for: 4) POC. Which I love. Well, sort of. I like to pretend ROC didnt happen, and POC is a reboot. I love most of the carded figures, but dislike most of the vehicles, and most of all, the vehicle drivers. I do not like a single one. Its almost like Hasbro is playing a game to see who can come up with the worst one to put in the box. At any rate, I have kept 12 Joes and and about 15 Cobras. They, to me, are what GI Joe should have been back when 25th first came out. They are brilliant. And now its over. To me, 30 for 30 is 25th all over again. I dont need ARAH for a third time. So I am kind of bailing out on figure buying. Its been worse though. Thankfully I missed, GI Joe Extreme, VvV, Spy Troops. Just because it was ARAH doesnt mean it was great either. Joe has sucked for a long time. BUT! There have been some great moments. What are your's? |

You know, I recently sold my Joes. Just lost interest in them. I solely collect Star Wars now.
One thing that I think is fair to consider, is that while some of the newer stuff might be interesting to older fans, the bulk of the reason they are collecting this line (and others) is simply because of nostalgia. Maybe that nostalgia has reached it's end and the interest is just no longer there.

So ROC was weak. We know from how many spilled over and are still spilling over into Ross/ Marshalls/ TJ. 25th some were under produced (SE w/ Timber Foil Card) some were over produced (CC, Duke, Dredknoks, Destro.... ok so maybe more than a few were overproduced.)

Man, i love my RoC figures...
The only Joe that doesn't work for me is the 12" collection... And i'll probably end up with some of those down the road!

They did a lot more right than they did wrong, I think. The evolution of the figures is really interesting to me. The only 25th stuff I have anymore are SE and SS, CC, Destro, Baroness and Zartan as well as some of the Cobra troop builders.
Truthfully, I really like a lot of the ROC stuff too. It was far from a perfect line, but again, I think they did more right than wrong. Trying new things isn't bad. The successes just make the failures stand out more. The reason that I really like ROC stuff is because it led to POC which is an amazing line, top to bottom. Even the action feature figs I enjoy. For a "filler" line, it's amazing how good it is. The reuse of parts in the last two waves is amazing. The fact that they were able to pretty much build 12 figures at I wanted from preexisting parts is phenomenal. I'm counting Croc Master and Blowtorch because I never purchased 25th versions of them. The new stuff looks even more amazing. I hope that the line continues and they make lots of newer figures to continue it. A Flint in that style would make me super happy. There is literally nothing coming out that I don't want. So. There you go.

With regard to more recent turns of events, a lot has worked, really. They (Hasbro) hit a major stumbling block with ROC and are still dealing with that perception that they don't know what the hell they are doing. ROC didn't have the mass appeal that they thought it would and it most certainly didn't resonate with the kids, which are the primary demographic. After all, if it (ARAH) didn't go over all that well with us when we were kids we may not even be discussing Joe.
I like the fact that John Chu is well versed in G.I. Joe and is passionate about the opportunity he's been given. I like what Hasbro is doing with the property now. With POC, the 30th Anniversary, and the upcoming Joe 2 movie, it looks as if Hasbro finally "gets it". Also, they look as though they are utilizing consumer/fan sentiment more than they have in the past. If the movie enjoys success, it will hopefully translate into an animated franchise that ties everything together for the sake of continuity. This all bodes well for the future of the franchise. Whether or not that assessment is accurate remains to be seen, but things are definitely looking up.

ROC and POC are my highlights...25th and ME were just disappointments..I don't want retreads of stuff that was questionable back in the 80s when it came out. I don't want joes with multicolored don't ask/don't tell uniforms and no unit cohesion. I don't want job-of-the-weekviper in his highly impractical costume.
So roc was pretty good. The RIA suits were excellent, and alot of the villain characters looked innovative and good. Then POC showed up and really hit it out of the park. |

the 25th line didnt really get good untill towards the last fewer waves, there was a winner in every wave but the later ones really stuck out to me. ROC was horrible, i hated everything about it and still do. POC is amazing! the figures are amazing, i really cant say enough good things about the poc line. i am geeked for the newer figs coming out and i hope this just gets better.
